Luxurious Crochet Throw

This crochet throw is made with a classic v-stitch. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize as it features a repeat of row three. To make this blanket even more beginner friendly, there is no border. The edges of this pattern square up nicely and the fluffy and soft texture of this blanket take center stage.

Velvet Crochet Yarns

Velvet crochet yarns seems to more and more popular every day. I can see why with the soft squishy texture that is created with each stitch. With the color options available, it is even easier to create a handmade work of art.

While this yarn is bulky and it is quick to work up into a blanket, there are a few tips and tricks that help crocheting with this type of yarn even easier.

You might ask, is velvet yarn hard to work with?

It can be. However, once you give it a try and get used to working with the yarn, it is a pleasure to work with and the results are just luxurious.

Due to the slipperiness of the velvet yarn, it is common for stitches to work their way out of position. Therefore, it is important to have a snug tension on the yarn. If you tend to crochet loosely, you might get better results to go down a hook size from what is recommended. This can help create a tighter stitch and keep all the stitches in place.

The need to check your stitches every few rows is especially important when crocheting with this chunky velvety yarn. If you do find that a stitch has loosened up, it is much easier to remove a few rows of stitches versus the whole thing.

However, with that said, never once did I have an issue with this lovely chunky throw.

Changing Skeins with Velvet Yarn

Whether you are just moving to the next skein on yarn or changing yarn color, it is best to try and change yarn at the end of a row. Additionally, since the yarn is slippery, tying a square knot is advised. The fluffy yarn tends to cover up the knot. Also weave in the yarn ends a bit more securely.

How to Wash a Velvet Crochet Blanket?

I have washed velvet blankets; however, I did have a few stitches work their way loose. They were still attached but had big bulky loops as the slippery yarn had moved in the wash.

What does work is placing the blanket in a large laundry bag and putting it in the washing machine without a center agitator. Front load washing machines on gentle work perfect. Once the blanket is washed, lay flat and let air dry.

Special Stitches

This pattern uses the Half Double Crochet (HDC) V-Stitch. This V-Stitch is made by crocheting two half double crochet stitches in the same stitch. NOTE: since the velvet yarn has a tendency to have stitches work their way out due to the slippery yarn, I did not complete a chain stitch between the half double crochet stitches.

Pattern Notes

Turn at the end of each row.

Rows 4 and beyond are a repeat of row 3.

Chain 1 at the end of the row does not count as a stitch, it is just a turning chain.

Two half double crochet stitches create the v-stitch. The v-stitch of each row is worked between the previous row v-stitch.

Each row begins and ends with a half double crochet stitch.
