Quick Homemade Pork Gravy

Gravy should be flavorful and creamy. This quick homemade pork gravy delivers on both. I made a pork shoulder roast a few months ago in the crock pot and saved the drippings.

A Few Simple Ingredients

It is so easy to achieve with just a few simple ingredients. Truly; butter, flour, pork juice, half & half, soy sauce, and water. That’s it. However, you can’t just put all the ingredients in a kettle and have it come out correctly.

Making a Roux
Making a Roux

First, you need to start with a roux (pronounced roo).

What is Roux?

Roux is a thickener used in sauces and soups. Generally, it is made from equal parts of flour and butter. it is important to cook the roux at least a minute as the flour needs to cook otherwise it will taste kind of like raw floury paste. There are many uses for roux. A roux can also be used as a base for starting homemade macaroni and cheese. I also use it to start the base for making creamed tuna or ham on toast. I will have to write those recipes one of these days too.

Homemade Gravy in a Snap

I froze the extra pork drippings from cooking. This works great for making a gravy any day of the week when you are pinched for time and you still want to feed your family a homemade meal that will make them clean their plates.
