Rectangle Shawl Inspiration

There are a few fashion shows that I have watched while crocheting. They always talk about Paris’s status as a hub of fashion innovation and creativity, drawing designers, buyers, and fashion lovers from around the world. Exclusive fashion events are held throughout the year such as Paris Fashion Week. Which is perhaps the most famous fashion event in the world.

Held twice a year, features haute couture and ready-to-wear collections from top designers and fashion houses such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. It draws celebrities, industry professionals, and fashion enthusiasts from around the globe. Then there is Haute Couture Week that showcases the most luxurious and intricate designs from the world’s leading haute couture designers.

As I was crocheting this gorgeous shawl, the colors and lacy design reminded me of something so fancy, you could attend a high fashion event in style wearing this women’s accessory.

How to Wear a Shawl Elegantly?

Drape over the shoulders, bring the ends under the arms and create a simple tie in the back. Great way to have arm coverage.

Wear it over the shoulders and drape over the arms. Hold the shawl behind you, with both ends draping evenly over each shoulder. Adjust the shawl so it hangs evenly on both sides and covers your arms and upper body.   Allow the ends of the shawl to hang freely or lightly drape them over your arms for added elegance.

Drape over the shoulders with one side hanging down and the other end over the shoulder held in place with a broach. Wonderfully elegant look whether it’s for a wedding party or another special occasion.

Styling the Paris Shawl

What is a good size for a rectangular shawl?

A nice size for a crochet rectangle wrap is usually around 60 to 70 inches in length and 18 to 20 inches in width. Often starting chain stitches worked in the shorter rows across is about 90-100 chains. If working the length of the shawl, try a starting chain of 220-260 stitches.

Natural Wicker Stitch

I first used this natural wicker stitch with bulky yarn to make this Puffy and Dreamy Chunky Crochet Throw Blanket. It’s quite easy to work too. If you can work the double crochet and the chain stitch, you can work this free crochet pattern. Just changing the yarn to a thread yarn creates a gorgeous lacy shawl with a 3d effect.

You can find the tutorial for the  Natural Wicker Stitch Crochet Tutorial using the link. It’s like a 3D v-stitch.

Front and Back of Natural Wicker Stitch in Thread Yarn

Directions: Rectangle Shawl Beautiful Night in Paris

Skill Level

Intermediate

You should be able to work the double crochet stitch and work it around the posts of the stitches below. Once you have mastered this method, you are ready for this pattern.

Finished Size

20 inches wide X 64 inches long.

However, you can easily make this in a different size. Adjust the length by adjusting the beginning foundational chain stitches by 4. Change the width to your desired length by adjusting the rows.

Gauge

16 stitches and 10 rows of double crochet every 4 inches.

Materials

Honolulu Thread Yarn from Hobbii. I used 1 skein of color number 03, which is 874 yards total. This yarn is a number 2 fine yarn gauge.

I have a links to Hobbii on my savings page.

5.0 mm Crochet Hook Size H. The recommended hook size on the yarn wrapper is 2.5-3.5 mm. However, I found the larger size to work well for this thread yarn rectangular shawl.

Tapestry Needle, to weave in yarn ends.

Abbreviations

See Special Stitches for how to work the v-stitch combinations below.

CH 2 V-Stitch = Chain Two V-Stitch

CH 3 V-Stitch = Chain Three V-Stitch

DC = Double Crochet

FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet

SK = Skip

SP = Space

ST = Stitch

STs = Stitches

[ ] = Repeat Between

Special Stitches

Chain Two V-Stitch (CH 2 V-Stitch). Work [1 DC, CH 2, 1 DC] into same ST.

Chain Three V-Stitch (CH 3 V-Stitch). Work [1 DC, CH 3, 1 DC] into same ST.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)

Front post stitches are raised crochet stitches on the surface of the fabric facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires. Yarn over, insert the hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below. Then insert the hook from the back to the front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn around the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
