Pattern Notes
Pattern written in U.S. Terms.
Ch 2 counts as a half double crochet stitch.
Turn at the end of each row.
Make sure to count the stitches the first few rows to double check that you will have nice straight edges. The last stitch after the second row will always be placed on the top chain stitch of the previous row.

Tips on Crocheting with Super Bulky Yarn and an Extra-Large Crochet Hook
It takes a bit of getting used to working with this big yarn and big hook. I practiced a bit before starting in with the blanket pattern. Try and get the chain stitches even and looking the same. If the stitch doesn’t look good, you may have to redo it a couple of times.
Take your time working with this bigger yarn. Continue adjusting your yarn so your stitches are not too tight.
Hold the hook that is most comfortable for you. I hold this as if I am holding the handle of a hammer. While there is a place on my hook to rest your thumb, I only used that when I was working my chain stitches. After that, I had too many loops on the hook and had to slide them up onto the hook further.
I also changed how I hold my yarn with my other hand. Rather than wrapping it around my pinky once and draping it over my index finger, I found it easier to let it slide between my index and middle fingers.
Use your yarn holding hand to help the yarn over the hook and adjust the stitches.
Your arms and wrists will get a workout. Take breaks crocheting with this large yarn and hook.
Adding New Yarn
Since this blanket project uses just one color of yarn all the way through and the yarn is so fluffy, I joined the yarn as I ran out. Using about a 6-inch piece of the current skein and new skein, make a square knot. Tying it left over right, and right over left. Pull the yarn ends to snug up the knot. Then weave in the yarn ends using your fingers to push the yarn through the stitches.
Update. After making a few of these blankets, I think this is a better way to join if you want to give it a try.
Melting Ends (for synthetic yarn)
For synthetic yarns, such as acrylic or nylon, melting the ends can be an effective way to create a seamless join. This technique involves carefully melting the yarn ends with a flame, such as a lighter, to fuse them together.
I use this for super bulky yarn. I’ve found when trying to tie a knot or weave in super bulky yarn, the ends always pop out.
Melting the ends is a great way create a seamless join. This technique involves carefully melting the yarn ends with a flame, such as a lighter, to fuse them together.
- Hold the yarn ends in one hand with both ends pointing out. It is easier to light the yarn on fire this way.
- In the other hand use a lighter or a candle to light the ends of the yarn on fire.
- Put the lit ends of the yarn together and the flame will go out.
- Roll the joined yarn together between the palms of your hands a few times.
That’s it. You can keep crocheting with your chunky yarn.
