Inspiration for Crochet Afghan
I mentioned to my daughter that she needed to help me pick out some yarn colors for a Holiday blanket. That was four months ago now. She picked out these colors and told me she wanted Christmas Tree Lights in the three different colors going through the blanket.
Now, I do not consider myself to be an expert! I am in the intermediate area. Therefore, I spent many hours, at least five starts and restarts of a pattern. Many scribbles and erasers in my crochet pattern notebook, trying to figure out how to accomplish the look. We are both incredibly pleased with the results here.
The result of this festive pattern is a cozy blanket perfect to brighten any Christmas decor. We have all the steps outlined in the free pattern.

Fun Bobbles Decorations
Christmas lights blanket pattern. The fun home decor is accomplished by using three different yarn colors in the same row. Paired with the deep green color, this is a trendy and fun crochet throw.
However, I think they would look lovely in a single color to resemble strung popcorn too. Just an idea. If you have not done a bobble stitch before, it might be easier to start carrying just one color of yarn through.
The addition of bobbles to this afghan pattern is very easy to achieve. If you are comfortable with the double crochet stitch, you have the skills to master the bobble stitch. The bobble crochet stitch is a simple method of crocheting six double crochet stitches together.
Carrying Yarn Through the Stitches
This pattern has three colors of bobbles in the same row. Therefore, all three colors are carried along the entire row. It is noticeable that there are yarn colors peeking through the row of bobbles. However, since the bobbles are supposed to represent Holiday Lights, it helps create the illusion of the electrical cord that the lights are hanging from.
If you prefer not to see the yarn color being carried along, you will want to use a color that is concealed better by the yarn that you are using to crochet over the yarn being carried.

Bobble Blanket Decked in Blue
Bobble Blanket Decked in Blue is another Holiday Blanket that was made this year. My daughter picked out both sets of yarn in fun Christmas colors. If you have the blue Christmas theme, this would be a lovely handmade item.
However, I think the best yarn for this fun design is a worsted weight yarn.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)
Back post stitches appear to recede on the side of the crocheted fabric that is facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires. Yarn over, insert the hook from back to front between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below.
Then insert the hook from the front to the back front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally in front of the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn over the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Last, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Bobble Stitch – Double Crochet 6 Together (DC6TOG)
Yarn over, insert the hook and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. [Yarn over and insert the hook into the same space and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook]. Repeat between [ ] four more times for a total of 6. Complete the bobble stitch by yarning over and pulling through all seven loops on the hook.
Double Crochet (DC)
Yarn over, insert the hook and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Front post stitches are raised crochet stitches on the surface of the fabric facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires. Yarn over, insert the hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below.
Then insert the hook from the back to the front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn around the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) – Modified
These are the instructions for a normal HHDC. Yarn over, insert the hook, pull up a loop. Pull this loop through the first loop on the hook. Last, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Here is my modification to the HHDC. Yarn over, insert the hook, pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull this loop through the first loop on the hook. Last, yarn over again and pull through the last three loops on the hook.
Single Crochet
Insert the hook, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the two loops on the hook.

Change the width by using multiples of 8 plus 2.
Gauge
4-inch X 4-inch swatch = 15 stitches X 4 rows of Double Crochet.

Pattern Notes for the Bobble Blanket
Turn at the end of each row.
Carry three colors of yarn along only in the row where the bobbles are completed.
This crochet pattern is a 12-row repeat.
The first row is worked in the back bump of the initial chain row of chain stitches.
Each row should end with 136 stitches completed. (the bobbles are counted as 1 stitch). Each row beginning chains are counted as a Stitch.
Each row is worked using the dark sage yarn. For the bobble rows, the dark sage yarn is worked over the three strands of colored yarn.
When you work the HHDC, use the modified version as noted above. This will give you just a bit more of a ridge and add to the visual appearance.
Counting in this pattern is particularly important. Being off by just one stitch, the bobble will be placed in the wrong location and it will be very noticeable.
Color Changes for Bobbles.
In the rows with a bobble beginning in the 8th stitch and working one in every 8th stitch to the end of the row, begin with Gold, next is Harvest Red, third color is Royal Blue. Repeat alternating in this color pattern all the way across. For this row, you will begin and end with a Gold colored bobble. There should be a total of 16 bobbles in this row.
In the rows with a bobble beginning in the 4th stitch and working on in every 8th stitch to the end of the row, begin with Harvest Red, next is Royal Blue, third color is Gold. Repeat alternating in this color pattern all the way across. For this row, you will begin with a Harvest Red and end with a Royal Blue colored bobble. There should be a total of 17 bobbles in this row.
There is a right side and wrong side to this blanket. You will know you might have done one too many rows of another stitch if your bobbles are popping out the wrong way.
To change colors for the bobble:
Pull through the colored yarn just before you finish the 7th stitch. Once the DC6TOG is worked for the bobble, just before you finish the bobble stitch, pull the dark sage through all 7 loops on the hook. This will give you a seamless color change and it will be very easy to count your stitches as well.
Keep Even Edges Throughout the Festive Crochet Blanket
When alternating between the Herringbone Half Double Crochet and the Double Crochet, it can be confusing to figure out where the first stitch goes. You will see two example photos with the yarn needle poked through the crochet stitch. The first stitch will be worked in the row after the initial chain stitches.
(I am showing you this because it looks slightly different. I kept messing up where to start after I had completed the HHDC row. Hope this helps you not have to rework a few rows).
The first photo shows the first stitch after the HHDC row is worked.
This second photo shows the first stitch after the DC row is worked.

Finishing
Weave in the dark sage yarn with a tapestry needle.
Tie the colored yarn ends for each row together. I just made a loop and pulled all 3 yarn ends through keeping the knot close to the beginning or end of the row. This will help keep the yarn from pulling back through. Additionally, the yarn will be crocheted over with the first round of the border.
Crocheting the Ribbed Border
Round 1
The single crochet stitches for this first round is a great way to help conceal the colored yarn.
Pull up a loop in any corner and CH 1. Work the first SC in the same ST and in each ST around the entire blanket, working 3 SC in each corner ST. SL ST into the initial SC to complete this round. On the sides of the blanket, do your best to work one SC per row.
(When crocheting on the sides, you will be crocheting over the colored yarn ends. When you get to the next row of colored ends, trim off the colored yarn ends from the previous row. This helps the colored yarn but up against each other and have continual color on the side).
Round 2
CH 3 (counts as DC), DC around the entire blanket, working 3 DC into each corner ending with a SL ST into the top CH of the first chain 3.
Round 3
Start with a CH 2. (the stitches on this row are a bit shorter than the regular DC). Complete an alternating ST pattern between FPDC and BPDC. Corners: When you get to the corners, continue to work 3 DC into the middle DC ST from the previous row. However, on the other two stitches from the previous row DCs in the corner – blend those into the FPDC and BPDC. See the photos of the corners to help show the detail.
Rounds 4-10
Repeat round 3. However, make sure to complete the FPDC and BPDC where the previous row FPDC and BPDC have been completed. This elongates that stitch and creates the beautiful ribbed look.
Here is a video on the Alternating FPDC and BPDC stitches for a crochet border.
