Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments

Many years ago, I made cinnamon salt dough ornaments with my daughter. She was so young; she barely remembers it. However, every year when we take them out of the Holiday decorations, we are greeted by that cinnamon smell.

Homemade Keepsakes for Christmas

We felt it was time to make them together again this year. What a lovely afternoon we had together. Most of the time was spent making our chocolates for the family as this takes just over two hours to bake in the oven. It gave us plenty of time to take a break and make some chocolate truffles too. We are sharing our recipe with you.

There is just over a week left before Christmas and it is the perfect time to make these quick homemade gifts to give to our family, friends, teachers, postal workers, and anyone else that you want to bring some Holiday cheer to.

Perfect Homemade Christmas Craft to Make with Your Kids

An adult should mix the dough and roll it out. Then kids can use the cookie cutters and place their creations on the cookie sheet that has either parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet on it.

An Easy Way to Make a Hole for Hanging the Ornament

I have used a metal chop stick that I have in the past. However, once I tried a straw, I use it all the time now. Use the straw to make the hole for hanging. What happens is that the dough gets pushed up inside the straw and you are left with a clean hole. You can quickly move to the next ornament and make the next hole. No digging the dough out of the center!

Once the dough starts to push up a little hard into one side of the straw, flip it over and use the other hole.

Ingredients in Salt Dough

This is a simple recipe with just a few ingredients. Flour, Salt, and Water. Adding the cinnamon makes this smell delicious. This dough is for an ornament, not to be eaten.

Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornament Steps

The nice thing about this salt dough recipe is that as soon as it is done drying in the oven, the decoration can begin. Use decorating paint, or a ribbon to hang this homemade ornament right away.

I lightly floured the board before rolling the dough so that the dough was less likely to stick. The second rolling of the dough scraps did not stick at all.

Cut out the dough into shapes using cookie cutters.

Use all the dough; keep rolling out the small scraps of dough making the ornaments. Use all the dough as it does not matter how tough the dough gets as it will not be consumed.

Make a hole for adding a string, twine, wire, or ribbon for easy hanging.

If you notice in the photos of the ornaments, the side that was down on the baking tray baked a bit more even darker shade. The top part of the ornament turned a bit white. I like both sides, but you might like to decorate one side versus the other.

Decorating the Ornaments

We generally just have the simple ornaments as is. However, if you wanted to paint a little bit on each one to make them even prettier, that can be come after they have cooled from the oven.
