Charlotte Espresso Swirl Boomerang Scarf Crochet Pattern

What is a Boomerang Scarf?

A boomerang scarf is a uniquely shaped scarf that resembles the curved, angled form of a boomerang. Unlike traditional rectangular scarves, a boomerang scarf has an asymmetrical triangular shape with one long, tapered side and two shorter edges.

This gives the scarf a modern, stylish drape that wraps around your neck more naturally and comfortably, creating a flattering look. Its shape is ideal for layering and works well with a variety of outfits, making it a versatile accessory that stands out from more conventional scarf styles.

What type of yarn would work well for this scarf?

For a boomerang scarf like the Espresso Swirl, a lightweight, drapey yarn works best to highlight the unique shape and flow of the design.

If you want to sue different colors throughout the pattern, using a yarn that already transitions colors is ideal. Variegated yarn makes this pattern even easier, and it adds natural color transitions without needing complex stitches.

You might want to choose a DK (double knit) or worsted weight yarn for a good balance between warmth and flexibility.

Yarns made from soft fibers like merino wool, cotton blends, or acrylic are ideal, as they offer both comfort and durability.

Changing the Size

Since the shawl grows in width and length as you crochet the rows, you can stop when it gets to the length and width that you desire.

Three Suggested Sizes

• Small: 27 X 39 inches
• Medium (shown): 32 X 49 inches
• Large: 36 X 56 inches

Gauge

14 stitches X 5 rows of double crochet stitches every 4 inches.

Materials

Red Heart Unforgettable yarn in Cappuccino color. Medium (shown). 3 Skeins or 810 yards total. It is a number 4 medium weight yarn.

Special Stitches

2 DC Cluster (2 DC CL)

Essentially, you are working 2 double crochet stitches into one stitch and joining them together. Work the first DC yarning over the first two loops and not finishing that first DC yet. Instead, you yarn over again, insert the hook and yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch. Now you yarn over and pull through just 2 loops. There should be 3 loops remaining. Now yarn over one last time and pull through all three loops.

Here is another way of explaining the 2 DC Cluster.

1. YO, insert hook into a ST.
2. YO, pull the yarn through the ST (3 loops on hook)
3. YO and pull through the first 2 loops. (2 loops on hook)
4. YO, insert hook into same ST.
5. YO and pull the yarn through the ST (4 loops on hook)
6. YO and pull through the first 2 loops (3 loops on hook)
7. YO and pull the yarn through all remaining loops.

4 Cluster Puff Stitch (Puff)

You will be working in one stitch. In short, you are working the yarn over, inserting the hook in the stitch, and yarning over again four times before yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook at once.

1. YO, insert hook into a ST.
2. YO, pull the yarn through the ST (3 loops on hook)
3. YO, insert hook into same ST.
4. YO and pull the yarn through the ST (5 loops on hook)
5. YO, insert hook into same ST.
6. YO and pull the yarn through the ST (7 loops on hook)
7. YO, insert hook into same ST.
8. YO and pull the yarn through the ST (9 loops on hook)
9. YO and pull the yarn through all 9 loops.

10.Normally, when working the cluster stitch, you would do a chain one after pulling the loop through all 9 loops. Then when working a pattern, you’d skip the chain. In this pattern, when I tried this method, it left a hole that I didn’t want. So, I skipped the chain one step.

Cluster V Stitch (CVS)

All in one stitch, work (2 DC CL, CH 1, 2 DC CL). When working in the CVS work into the CH 1 SP. You will always be skipping over the 2 DC CL and only working into the CH 1 SP.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is written in US terms.

All measurements given are unblocked.

CH 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.

CH 3 at the beginning of the rows counts as a DC.

The pattern is a repeat of rows 12 through 17.

The shawl starts at a point and expands on one side as you complete the rows. When you get to row 12, you will slip stitch in a few stitches to create a point on one side.

Note for row 14 and row 16: As the scarf grows, the stitches worked between the [ ] where you end up will change. Just continue the pattern until the 2 stitches remain.

Turn at the end of each row.

Work 1 CVS in the 4^th CH from the Hook. Turn (1 DC, 1 CVS)

Row 2

CH 1, CVS into the CH 1 SP of the previous row CVS, 3 DC into the top of the beginning CH 4. Turn (3 DC, 1 CVS)

Row 3

CH 3 (Counts as DC). 2 DC into the same ST. CH 1, SK 1 ST, DC in the next ST, CVS into the CH 1 SP of the previous row CVS. Turn (4 DC, 1 CH, 1 CVS)
