Inspired by the quiet strength found in nature, Stone & Tide is a textured chunky crochet blanket designed to feel both grounding and comforting. Worked with jumbo-weight yarn, this free pattern creates a bold, sculptural fabric.  That reflects resilience shaped over time, like stones smoothed by the steady rhythm of the tide.

Dedication

Created with strength, hope, and love in mind for those who keep standing, even as the tides change.

This design is dedicated to those who continue to rise with strength and grace, even when the journey is shaped by unseen challenges. May every stitch serve as a reminder that endurance, hope, and love can be felt—one moment at a time.

Yarn & Texture

This pattern is worked using Bernat Blanket Big, a jumbo-weight yarn known for its plush feel and cozy drape. The thickness of the yarn creates a beautiful substantial fabric with excellent stitch definition. Ideal for a statement blanket that feels like a warm hug. Other jumbo-weight yarns with a similar thickness may be substituted, though changes in yarn may affect the final size and texture.

Colorwork & Finishing

The blanket is worked using three colors, with a color change at the end of each row. This simple color sequence enhances the texture of the stitch pattern and creates a calm, balanced visual rhythm throughout the blanket.

To keep the edges clean and reduce bulk, yarn ends are melted together along the sides of the blanket rather than woven in. This technique works especially well with chenille-style yarns like Bernat Blanket Big. If preferred, you may choose to secure and weave in ends using your usual finishing method.

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner

While this blanket uses the chain stitch and single crochet, working with jumbo yarn can be a bit more challenging.

If you’re comfortable with basic stitches and following a simple repeat, this pattern will be approachable and enjoyable.

Gauge

Approximately 3.0 stitches and 2.6 rows every 4 X 4 inches.

Gauge is not critical for this blanket; however, maintaining a loose, even tension will help achieve the intended drape.

Finished Size

This pattern comes in five suggested sizes.

  • Lap or Toddler Blanket: 40 X 50
  • Small Throw Blanket: 45 X 56 (Shown)
  • Medium Throw Blanket: 50 X 60
  • Large Throw Blanket: 60 X 60
  • X-Large Blanket: 70 X 70

Varying the Size

To change the width, increase or decrease the number of chain stitches by any even number of stitches. Adjust the length by increasing or decreasing the rows.

Pattern Notes

Written in US Terms.

This blanket uses the linen stitch, which is easy to repeat and works especially well with chunky yarn.

If you’re new to the linen stitch or would like a visual refresher, I’ve included a video tutorial that shows how to crochet this stitch using a medium-weight yarn, making the stitches easy to see. The same stitch pattern is used in this blanket, so you can follow along confidently before switching to plush yarn.

You can find Video Tutorials after the written pattern.

Melting the Yarn Ends. Color changes are made at the end of each row. I melted the ends of the yarn together, let it cool a few seconds, then gave it a tug to make sure they were secured.

Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. You’ve just made a chain stitch. Continue yarning over and drawing the yarn through the loop on the hook to make more chain stitches.

Single Crochet (SC)
