Blue Spruce Chunky Throw Blanket Crochet Pattern

Make this cozy Blue Spruce Chunky Throw Blanket with jumbo yarn! Beginner-friendly, stash-buster crochet pattern with 4 sizes and detailed instructions.

This crochet pattern came together as a stash-buster project for my daughter’s friend, who simply asked for “something really cozy.” And let me tell you… mission accomplished. The moment she wrapped up in it; we knew this one was a keeper.

Jumbo Yarn Stash

Last year, we purchased a lot of jumbo yarn, and we’ve been busy making blankets and even a floor lounger since. We went searching in our few remaining boxes of our super chunky yarn stash.  Those soft, squishy skeins that were just begging to be turned into something warm and comforting.

The combination of deep blue spruce and soft gray felt calm and classic, with just enough contrast to let the texture really shine. It’s the kind of blanket that looks beautiful draped over a couch but is even better for snuggling under on a chilly evening. It feels like a weighted blanket.

Whether you’re making this for a loved one, adding a cozy touch to your home, or just using up some of that chunky yarn in your stash, this blanket is one you’ll come back to again and again. It’s easy, relaxing, and incredibly satisfying to watch grow stitch by stitch.

Stitch Choice & Texture

What we love most about this pattern is how simple it is to create something that looks so rich and textured. This blanket uses a simple modified V stitch—two double crochet stitches worked between the two double crochets from the previous row, without the chain space that’s typically used in a traditional V stitch.

By omitting the chain, the fabric becomes even more dense and plush, giving the blanket a thicker, more substantial feel. It also creates a soft, zig-zagging texture that adds visual interest without being overly busy. The result is a beautifully balanced stitch pattern that feels both modern and timeless.

It works up quickly with jumbo yarn and a large hook, making it perfect for weekend crocheting or last-minute gift making.

Why This Yarn Works So Well

Super bulky yarn like Bernat Blanket Big is truly the star of the show here. Its soft, chenille texture pairs perfectly with this stitch pattern, filling in the spaces and creating that signature squishy, cozy feel we all love in a chunky blanket.

Because the stitch pattern is simple and repetitive, the yarn really gets to shine. You don’t lose any of that plush texture in complicated stitches. Instead, every loop adds to the overall warmth and softness.

Color Inspiration

The Blue Spruce and Earl Gray color combination gives this blanket a calm, cozy, nature-inspired feel. Like a quiet walk through evergreens on a cool day. But this pattern is incredibly versatile and would look beautiful in so many color palettes.

Here are a few ideas if you want to switch it up:

  • Soft neutrals (cream, taupe, and gray) for a classic, timeless look
  • Warm tones (rust, cream, and brown) for a cozy fall vibe
  • Bold monochrome (all one color) to really highlight the texture

Don’t be afraid to dig into your stash—this is a great pattern for mixing and matching what you already have on hand.

Easy, Repeating Pattern

If you’re looking for a relaxing, no-stress project, this is it. The pattern is made up of a simple, repeating row that’s easy to memorize after just a few passes. Once you get into the rhythm, it becomes the kind of project you can work on while watching a show or winding down at the end of the day.

It’s beginner-friendly, but still satisfying for more experienced crocheters who want something quick and cozy on their hook.

Sizing Options

This pattern includes instructions for four different sizes, so you can make the perfect blanket for any space or occasion. Whether it’s a lap throw, or a full-size blanket to snuggle under on the couch.

Finishing

To keep the edges clean and reduce bulk, yarn ends are melted together along the sides of the blanket rather than woven in. This technique works especially well with chenille-style yarns like Bernat Blanket Big. If preferred, you may choose to secure and weave in ends using your usual finishing method.

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner

While this blanket uses the double crochet stitch, working with jumbo yarn can be a bit more challenging. If you’re comfortable with basic stitches and following a simple repeat, this pattern will be approachable and enjoyable.

Gauge

Approximately 2.5 stitches and 1.6 rows every 4 X 4 inches.

Gauge is not critical for this blanket; however, maintaining a loose, even tension will help achieve the intended drape.

Finished Size

This pattern comes in four suggested sizes.

  • Lap or Toddler Blanket: 50 X 40 inches
  • Medium Throw Blanket: 60 X 50 inches (shown)
  • Large Throw Blanket: 60 X 60 inches
  • X-Large Throw Blanket: 70 X 70 inches

Varying the Size

To change the length, increase or decrease the number of chain stitches by any odd number of stitches. Width can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing the rows.

Materials

Yarnspirations Bernat Big yarn. #7 jumbo yarn weight. 100% polyester with 32 yards per skein.

Two colors:

  • Color B: Earl Gray

Yardage & Skeins Needed

  • Lap/Toddler Blanket (50 x 40 in) – 277 yards: 5 skeins Color A, 5–6 skeins Color B (10–11 skeins total) see note on ending rows
  • Medium Throw Blanket (60 x 50 in, shown) – 415 yards: 6 skeins Color A, 7 skeins Color B (13 skeins total)

  • X-Large Blanket (70 x 70 in) – 680 yards: 11 skeins Color A, 11–13 skeins Color B (22–24 skeins total) see note on ending rows

Ending Rows

The blanket pattern repeats in a 3-row sequence:

  • 2 rows yarn color A: Blue Spruce
  • 1 row yarn color B: Earl Gray

Repeat this sequence until you reach your desired length.

To have the blanket start and end with the same color sequence:

The medium throw naturally ends symmetrically.

For all other sizes, you’ll need to add 1–2 extra rows of yarn color A at the end, which is why extra skeins are required.

Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. (The first chain stitch is complete).

Double Crochet (DC)

To work a regular double crochet, yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in U.S. Crochet Terms.

The chain-3 at the beginning of each row counts as a double crochet.

Place the last stitch of each row into the top of the turning chain from the previous row.

The double crochet V-Stitches throughout the pattern are placed between the previous row double crochet V-Stitches.

Melting the Yarn Ends. Color changes are made at the end of each row. I melted the ends of the yarn together, let it cool a few seconds, then gave it a tug to make sure they were secured.

Yarn Color Changes

This pattern is worked using two colors.

Change colors at the start of each row in the following order following the 3-row repeating pattern: 2 rows Blue Spruce: Yarn color A, 1 row Earl Gray: Yarn color B.

Repeat this color sequence throughout the pattern. *If you desire to make the final rows symmetrical with the beginning rows, make sure to end with two rows of Blue Spruce: Yarn color A.
