Easy Crochet Ripple Blanket: Wavy Berry Bliss Throw

If you’ve been searching for a crochet ripple blanket pattern that’s equal parts fun, colorful, and beginner-friendly, you’re in the right place. This ripple crochet blanket combines the classic wavy stitch design with modern, vibrant yarn that does all the color-changing magic for you.

It’s the kind of project that looks impressive but is simple enough for any crocheter to enjoy. The wavy design almost feels like it’s moving, adding a beautiful flow of texture that makes you want to snuggle right in.

Bright, Cheerful, and Fun

I made this blanket for my nephew’s wife. She is all about bright and cherry colors. For this project, I reached for Lion Brand Mandala Baby in the color “Unicorn Cloud.” And I have to say, the yarn truly lived up to its magical name.

The soft gradient of pinks, purples, blues, and teals worked up into the most playful stripes, making every row exciting to see unfold. It’s like painting with yarn, one wave at a time.

Best of all, the waves appear identical on both sides, ensuring a polished look from any angle.

Make this Throw Blanket in Five Sizes

I used a size I crochet hook with this #3 light weight yarn, which gives the blanket a lovely drape without feeling too heavy. The size you see in the photos is the medium throw, measuring about 54 x 70 inches. Perfect for curling up on the couch or adding a pop of color to a favorite chair.

But I know everyone loves options, so the pattern also includes instructions for five different sizes. I’ve included instructions for five different sizes, so you can make anything from a baby blanket to a large throw blanket. All with the same easy, wavy design.

Blanket Width and Length Switch Up

One thing that makes this ripple blanket a little different from most patterns is the way it’s worked. Typically, when crocheting a ripple or chevron blanket, the foundation chain sets the width of the blanket, and the rows add the length.

For this design, I flipped it! The foundation chain determines the length of your blanket, while the rows build the width. This means the beautiful ripple waves flow lengthwise, running from the top to the bottom of the blanket rather than side to side.

Why do it this way? When you’re snuggled up under a lightweight throw, the long rippling waves create a flowing, vertical effect that feels extra cozy and visually striking. It also helps the blanket drape more naturally across your body.

So, when you begin, keep in mind that your starting chain will decide how long your finished blanket will be, and the number of rows you work will set the width.

Crochet Pattern Notes

This pattern is written in U S Crochet Terms.

Turn at the end of each row.

The chain three at the beginning of each row counts as a double crochet.

Repeat row 2 throughout the pattern.

After the first row, all the stitches are worked in the back loop.

It is quite easy to keep track of where you left off with the repeating pattern. When working the double crochet two together stitches, they create the valleys. Working two double crochet stitches in one stitch creates the soft peaks. These are the two key elements in working the simple ripple stitch.

The length of your starting chain will shorten by a few inches due to the peaks and valleys.

In this blanket, the foundation chain sets the length and the rows build the width. This makes the ripple waves run lengthwise down the blanket instead of across, creating a cozy drape when you’re snuggled underneath.

Basic Crochet Stitches Used

Double Crochet (DC). Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Double Crochet 2 Together (DC2TOG). This decreases the stitches by one double crochet stitch each time this is worked.

First. Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be three loops on the crochet hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops on the hook. There should now be just two loops left on the hook.

Second. Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. There will be four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops. There should now be just three loops on the hook.

Lastly, yarn over and pull through the remaining three loops.

Begin Crochet Pattern

Start by making a slip knot and adding the loop on the hook.

Chain your desired number of chains.

  • Baby Blanket = 101 chain stitches
  • Child or Lapghan Blanket = 185 chain stitches
  • Small Throw Blanket = 213 chain stitches
  • Medium Throw Blanket = 255 chain stitches
  • Large Throw Blanket = 269 chain stitches

Reminder: In this blanket, the foundation chain sets the length and the rows build the width. This makes the ripple waves run lengthwise down the blanket instead of across, creating a cozy drape when you’re snuggled underneath.

Row 1

DC in 4th chain from hook. (First 3 CH STs skipped count as a DC). [1 DC in each of the next 4 CH STs.  Work a DC2TOG, and one more DC2TOG. Work 1 DC in each of the next 4 CH STs. Work 2 DC in the next CH ST, and 2 DC in the next CH ST.] Repeat across between [ ]. End with 2 DC in the last CH ST. Turn

Ribbed Ripple Rows 1 and 2

Row 2

All stitches in this row and beyond work in the back loop only. (BLO)

CH 3 (Counts as a DC). DC in the same ST in the BLO. (Another way to say this, if you count STs, it will be the 4th CH from the hook). [1 BLO DC in each of the next 4 STs. 2DCTOG twice in the BLO. Work 1 BLO DC in each of the next 4 STs. 2 BLO DC in the next ST, and 2 BLO DC in the next ST.] Repeat across between [ ]. End with 2 BLO DC into the top of the CH 3 turning chain from the previous row. Turn

Rows 3 and Beyond

Repeat row 2

  • Baby Blanket = 52 rows
  • Child or Lapghan Blanket = 75 rows
  • Small Throw Blanket = 91 rows
  • Medium Throw Blanket = 93 rows
  • Large Throw Blanket = 105 rows

Finishing

After you work the last ST, cut off the yarn leaving about a 12-inch long tail. Pull the yarn tail through the last loop on the hook.

Thread the yarn needle with the yarn tails and weave them through the crochet stitches back and forth until the yarn feels secure. Snip off the excess yarn.
