This footprints in the sand beach semi-circle crochet shawl is the perfect cover up on a warm sunny day. Making shawls for me never gets boring. Use one fine yarn gradient cake that comes to life with each crochet stitch that is completed.
A breathtaking creation that seamlessly blends the tranquility of the beach with the artistry of crochet. Picture yourself strolling along the shore, the gentle waves lapping at the sand beneath your feet, and the sun setting in a palette of warm beach hues. This shawl captures that serene essence with its colors, reminiscent of a sunset over the ocean. The perfect accessory for family vacations or just a relaxing beach day with the whole family.
A lovely semi-circle shawl pattern with beautiful drape.
Designed as a semi-circle, this shawl offers a unique twist to your crochet repertoire. The use of thread yarn adds a delicate touch, creating a lightweight accessory that drapes elegantly over your shoulders. It’s a perfect project for those seeking a challenge beyond the basics but still approachable for those advancing in their crochet skills.

Crochet Pattern Inspiration
When I was just about ten rows in on this shawl, I could tell this pattern design would be so pretty with the yarn cake colors. Upon showing this to my daughter, she said, she liked the random puff stitches. When you read on through the pattern, you will see that they are not random at all. However, in the beginning of this beauty, they do look that way.
As I was continuing to work on this pattern, the puff stitch placement reminded me of footprints. The colors reminded me of the beach with the sand in your toes and the lovely jewel tones of the rippling water.
I brought this shawl into work to show my friend and told her about the name. She sent me a photo of her footprints in the sand from their last vacation. What a coincidence. We both love the shawl and the name.
As many of my fellow crocheters do, I gave this gorgeous shawl to my friend. She will be wearing it in two weeks on her next vacation. Just makes my day!
Beautiful Beach Wear
Can you Imagine yourself somewhere on a beach wearing this coverup, in your beach slip-ons and enjoying a cool beverage sitting in the shade watching the waves lightly roll in and the sunlight dance on the water?
Lightweight Shawl Perfect for Hot Summer Days
If you are not able to make it to the beach this year, now worries. The light yarn makes this a lovely crochet project for those warm summer days. The lightweight shawl can be wrapped and styled in so many ways. This is a very versatile accessory for your wardrobe.
Semi-Circle Shawl Design
This footprints in the sand beach shawl is worked in a semi-circular design. The shawl is worked from the top-down growing with each row that is added.
Customize the Shawl Size
This is an easy crochet pattern grows by eight stitches with each round.
Today, I used a fine number 2 yarn cake that has 874 yards. This makes for a nice size shawl. However, if you want a smaller one, just stop when it is the size you desire.
I kept going until I was not able to make a full row with the yarn that I had.
Yarn for This Crochet Pattern
Today, I used one skein of yarn from Hobbi. It is called Twirls and has 874 yards of thread-like number 2 yarn. The color is called number 1. If you are not able to find this exact yarn where you are, this can be made with any similar yarn.
If you would prefer to make this with a medium weight yarn, that can also be done, just us the crochet hook size noted on the yarn package that you have. Additionally, plan on using 700-1,000 yards of yarn.
The sizing will be different than mine, but I bet you will end up with a lovely shawl too.
Crochet Video Tutorials
I do have a video tutorial link right by the Puff Stitch directions. However, at the bottom of the pattern there are crochet tutorials showing this pattern worked in a worsted weight yarn hoping it shows the stitches better. After the worsted weight part of the video I do show working in this fine yarn as well.
There is a chart showing the stitch counts for each row. This is helpful in marking off each row as you work this crochet pattern. the PDF printable without ads will also have this chart included in the directions for you.

The shawl is worked from the top down, increasing in size as each row is completed.
Special Stitches
Puff Stitch
I will provide details on how to complete the puff stitch; however, it is important to note that the puff stitch can be made in any size you want. Therefore, you might see another designer’s pattern explain a different number of yarn wraps around the hook. That is okay, just know that there are other options beyond the one I am using in this crochet pattern.
Completing the puff stitch.
- Step 1: Yarn over and insert the hook in the stitch where the puff stitch will be placed. Yarn over and pull through a loop. There are now three loops on the hook.
- Step 2: Yarn over again and insert the hook in the same stitch area that you previously inserted your hook. Yarn over and pull through a loop. There are now five loops on the hook.
- Step 3: Repeat step two twice more. You will have nine loops on the hook. Yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through all nine loops on the hook.
- Finishing: Yarn over one more time and pull through the one loop on the hook to complete the puff stitch.
Remember you can increase or decrease the loops on the hook as you need for future crochet projects. Make it puffier by adding loops, decrease the puffiness by reducing the number of loops on the hook.
