Plush Easy Stitch Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern (Free)

I’ve designed a delightful two-color Plush Easy Stitch Chunky Crochet Blanket pattern that’s perfect for advanced beginners and seasoned crocheters alike. This pattern uses sherpa-style jumbo weight yarn to create a warm, snuggly blanket that’s perfect for chilly nights. With its soft, cloud-like texture and easy stitch construction, this free crochet pattern will help you create a luxurious, inviting blanket you’ll want to cuddle up with all season long.

Wrap Yourself in Ultimate Comfort

This blanket was designed using Lion Brand Go For Fleece, a plush bulky yarn with a sherpa-style texture. Its soft, fleece-like feel creates a warm, cozy blanket while allowing the simple stitch pattern to shine.

Plush Easy Stitch Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern (Free)

If you love the look of plush, cozy blankets but want a pattern that keeps the stitching straightforward, this one is for you. The body of the blanket is worked with simple double crochet stitches placed between stitches, which helps make stitch placement easier to see and maintain — even when working with fluffy, textured yarn.

The real showstopper is the two-color border, worked with chain stitches and slip stitches to create a classic candy stripe (barber pole) effect. This playful detail adds a polished finish that elevates the design while still keeping the overall construction approachable and enjoyable to crochet.

This pattern includes four size options, making it easy to create anything from a cozy lap blanket to a larger throw for snuggling on the couch.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

  • Simple stitches, beautiful texture. Easy double crochet stitches let the plush yarn create all the visual impact.
  • Stitches worked between stitches. This technique improves stitch visibility and consistency when using fluffy yarn.
  • Eye-catching two-color border. The candy stripe / barber pole border adds interest without being complicated.
  • Plush, cozy, and modern. The chunky yarn creates a soft, luxurious fabric perfect for gifting or everyday use.
  • Multiple sizes included. Four size options make it easy to customize your finished blanket.
  • Free and easy to follow. Written clearly with maker-friendly techniques in mind.

Yarn Choice: Lion Brand Go for Fleece

Lion Brand Go for Fleece has a sherpa-style texture that gives this crochet blanket a soft, fleece-like feel similar to store-bought sherpa throws. For this blanket, I used two cozy colors: Cream and Seafoam.

This super bulky #7 yarn is made from 100% polyester and creates an incredibly plush, luxurious fabric when worked up. One of the things I love most about crocheting with Go For Fleece is how soft it feels in your hands as you work — this project feels indulgent from the very first row and results in a cozy, high-end finish.

Because this is a fluffy yarn, stitches can be a bit harder to see compared to smoother yarns. That said, the simple double crochet stitch works beautifully with this yarn and creates a thick, cozy fabric without complicated stitch work. If you’re newer to plush yarn, I recommend crocheting by feel when needed and using stitch markers to help keep your place.

Pattern Notes

Written in US Terms.

This blanket uses the double crochet stitch, which is easy to repeat and works especially well with plush yarn. The first row may take a little extra patience as you work into the starting chain, but once you’re crocheting between the stitches, the pattern becomes very simple and relaxing. Tip. Gently tug the chain stitches apart so you can see where the stitches are to work in.

The border uses chain stitches and slip stitches alternating between both yarn colors throughout the round.

Helpful Video Tutorial

I’ve included a video tutorial that shows how to crochet this stitch using a medium-weight yarn, making the stitches easy to see. You can find Video Tutorials after the written pattern.

Color Changes & Yarn Ends

Color changes are made at the end of each row. When changing colors, join the new yarn using a secure square knot. With this plush sherpa-style yarn, the knot holds very securely.

After tightening the knot, trim the yarn tails to approximately ¼ inch. Because of the thickness and texture of the yarn — and the addition of the border — the yarn ends are fully concealed and not visible in the finished blanket.

If you prefer, you may leave longer tails and weave them in; however, this is not required for this pattern when using plush polyester yarn.

Always give your knot a firm tug to ensure it is secure before trimming.

Repeating Color Pattern

This blanket uses a repeating three-section row sequence of 4 rows, 2 rows, and 3 rows. The colors alternate each time the sequence repeats.

First sequence:

  • Seafoam: 4 rows
  • Cream: 2 rows
  • Seafoam: 3 rows

Next sequence:

  • Cream: 4 rows
  • Seafoam: 2 rows
  • Cream: 3 rows

Continue repeating the 4-2-3 row sequence, alternating colors each time, until the blanket reaches the desired length.

The row counts remain the same for each repeat; only the color order alternates.

Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. You’ve just made a chain stitch. Continue yarning over and drawing the yarn through the loop on the hook to make more chain stitches.

Double Crochet (DC)

Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Single Crochet (SC)

Crochet Border (Candy Stripe Barber Pole)

Crochet Border (Candy Stripe / Barber Pole)

This blanket has a one-row, two-color border worked using chain stitches and slip stitches to create a classic candy stripe (barber pole) effect. Both yarn colors are carried along the edge and alternated throughout the round.

Note: My blanket ended on the Seafoam color. Continue the border using whichever color you end on.

Border Instructions

Step 1 (Set-Up):
Turn your work. With your current color, CH 3, SK 2 DC STs, SL ST into the space between the next 2 DC STs. Pull up a loop and leave it loose (do not fasten off).

Join the second color in the same space where the 2 DC STs were skipped. CH 3, SK 2 DC STs, SL ST into the space between the next 2 DC STs. Pull up a loop and leave it loose.

Step 2:
Return to the first color. Bring the loop to the front, insert your hook, and snug the yarn. CH 3, SK 2 DC STs (this is the space where the second color was just worked), SL ST into the space between the next 2 DC STs. Pull up a loop and leave it loose.

Step 3:
Return to the second color. Bring the loop to the front, insert your hook, and snug the yarn. CH 3, SK 2 DC STs (this is the space where the first color was just worked), SL ST into the space between the next 2 DC STs. Pull up a loop and leave it loose.

Step 4 (Repeat):
Continue alternating colors by repeating Steps 2 and 3 around the entire blanket edge.

Border Tip

To prevent puckering or bunching, gently hold each CH 3 against the edge of the blanket. Wherever the chain naturally reaches without pulling, work the SL ST. This makes it easier to ease the border around corners and along the sides and bottom edges.

End the round by working a SL ST into ST where you started with the first color. For the second color, I did not go around the corner. I ended at the ST just before the corner as this placing looked more like the diagonal striping.

Finishing

Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends on the back of the work. Weave back and forth 3–5 times, then trim excess yarn.
