What Does Boho Mean?
Generally, “boho” is a slang term for the the dress style of hippies and vintage fashion. Often the element of fringe is included in the look. However, the modern boho chic appearance, which became popular in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, has a bit more of a classic and vintage look to the pieces.
These easy crochet coasters fit right in. Pair the puff stitch with the whipped cream yarn color and the fun fringe, and you have a winner in my book. They look so lovely any time of the year on your furniture that you would like to protect.
Crochet Mug Rug
Crochet mug rugs work up quickly and I have designed a few lately. They are just so much fun to make. I can make an entire set of four in an afternoon. Actually, it takes longer to cut the fringe pieces to size and add the fringe, than it does to actually crochet the coaster.
I just love the texture!
Crochet Puff Stitch
This crochet pattern features the single crochet puff stitch.Alternate this stitch with a row of single crochet. If you are new to crochet, a smaller project like this is a great way to practice new stitches. However, if you have been crocheting a while as I have, this coaster is just a fun and quick project to make.
I have a blanket that I am in the middle of making; however, I needed a break and made some wonderful new crochet coasters. It is nice to break up larger project with these smaller ones. Now, I am ready to get back to the blanket.

Special Stitches
Single Crochet Puff Stitch: Insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and draw the yarn through all four loops on the hook.
Directions
Beginning
I did a chainless foundation single crochet of 18 stitches.
If you would rather start this pattern with chain stitches, I have those directions for you a bit further down.
Row 1
CH 1, complete a Single Crochet Puff Stitch in the first ST and each ST across. turn. (18 STs)
Row 2
CH 1, complete a SC in the first ST and each ST across, turn (18 STs)
Rows 3-16
Repeat rows 1 and 2. End with a row 2.
Here is the other way to complete this crochet pattern
Alternative Beginning: If you would rather use a row of chain stitches,
Chain 19.
Row 1
SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH across. turn (18 STs)
Row 2
CH 1, complete a Single Crochet Puff Stitch in Each ST across. turn (18 STs)
Rows 3-16
Repeat rows 1 and 2. End with a row 2.
Hint to a cleaner look on the bottom row: if you start with this chain stitch rather than the chainless foundation single crochet, work into the back bump of the chain. This will create less of a gap in the stitches when adding the fringe.
If working in the back bump of the chain stitch is new to you, here are a few photos to help you.
In the photo below, the needle is pointing at the back bump of the chain stitch.
Insert the hook into the back bump and complete the desired crochet stitch.
Adding Fringe to the Mug Rug
To create the fringe, cut 6-inch pieces of yarn. You will need 3 pieces of yarn for each fringe. Add one fringe on each corner stitch and every other stitch between.
Once the fringe is added, Trim to approximately 2 inches.
To attach the fringe, use your hook to push through the foundation chain two loops.
Fold the yarn in half and loop the middle onto the hook and pull through. Bring the strands of yarn through the loop and pull snug.
