Can a Beginner Crochet This Infinity Scarf?
If you are new to crocheting, you might be wondering if you can crochet an infinity scarf. This project might look complicated; however, it is relatively easy to create. This pattern uses basic crochet stitches; therefore, a confident beginner will do well with this crochet pattern.
The scarf is crochet in a rectangle, then joined to make a circle scarf. The faux fur is crocheted on the top and bottom of the circle.
How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Scarf?
This pattern works up quickly. I was able to complete this entire infinity scarf in three evenings of watching television. Total it was about 9 hours. I was not in a hurry when I was crocheting this pattern, just enjoying the journey and spending time with my family.
How Long Should an Infinity Scarf Be Crocheted?
You can make a scarf any length, but a good rule of thumb is to make it 55-inches minimum. In general, I will see crochet patterns that have a scarf length anywhere from 55-75-inches.
To adjust the size of your scarf, you will have to change the length of your starting chain. If you want the scarf to be longer, begin with a longer starting chain. You can also make the scarf shorter by using a shorter starting chain.
How Many Chains Do You Need for An Infinity Scarf?
It will depend on the type of yarn you use and the size of crochet hook. For this pattern, I use a medium weight yarn and size I crochet hook. To get a finished length of 57-inches, I started with 175 foundation chain stitches.
The thicker and larger your crochet hook, the less chain stitches you will need. Conversely, the thinner the yarn and smaller the hook, the more foundation chain stitches you will need. Additionally, it will depend on your crochet style, whether you have a tighter or looser crochet stitch.
Crochet Basics of how to Crochet a Cowl
If you are wondering how to crochet a cowl or a wrap around scarf, there are generally two methods used. Each pattern will have the specific type of stitches to use; however, they will use one of these two methods to make a scarf into an infinity cowl.
- The first method is a two-step process. Crochet a long rectangular scarf. Lay the ends flat and sew them together or use the crochet hook and use a slip stitch to join the ends.
- The second method is worked in the round. Work the first foundation chain length and join to the first chain with a slip stitch to form a ring. Each row that is added is worked in the circle and joined with a slip stitch at the end of each round.
How to Crochet a Half Double Crochet in the Front Two Loops
This crochet pattern uses a modified half double crochet stitch that is worked in the front two loops rather than the top two loops of the previous row. The result is a subtle ridge that is created on the wrong side of the work.
After working the row 1 half double crochet stitches, turn your work.
Starting with row 2
Chain 2. We will count the chain 2 as the first half double crochet for this tutorial. Therefore, in the next stitch, work the first half double crochet.
Yarn over and insert the hook through the front two loops of the stitch in the previous row. Yarn over and bring the loop through. There should be three loops on the hook. Yarn over and bring the loop through all three loops on the hook.
Continue working the HDC stitch in the front two loops of each stitch across ending with a half double crochet in the last stitch.

Pattern Notes
This crochet pattern is worked the length of the scarf. With each row that is added making the scarf wider.
Turn at the end of each row.
Chain 2 at the beginning of each row counts as a half double crochet.
To change the length of the scarf, increase or decrease the beginning chain stitches. Since this is a multiple of one, any number of chains will work. The width can be changed by adding or subtracting rows.
This pattern is for an average women’s size scarf that measures between 50 and 60 inches in length.
This infinity scarf is worked flat and joined into an circle at the end. However, you can keep this as a regular scarf and not join to wear as a cozy scarf.
The half double crochet stitch is modified in this pattern to create a slight ridge on the wrong side with each row. Rather than work a half double crochet in the top two loops, work the half double crochet in the front two loops.
The faux fur is added after the scarf is joined to make an infinity scarf.
Begin
CH 175
Row 1
In the 3rd CH from the Hook, work a HDC. [In the next CH work a HDC] Repeat across between [ ] ending with a HDC in the last ST.
Row 2
CH 2 (Counts as HDC). HDC in each ST across inserting the hook through the front two loops only. End with a HDC in the last ST.
Row 3
CH 2 (Counts as HDC). HDC in each ST across inserting the hook through the front two loops only. End with a HDC in the top CH of the previous row CH 2.
Rows 4– 14
Repeat row 3 until your scarf reaches the desired width.
Finishing-Joining
When you have reached your desired length, tie off the yarn leaving about 20-inches of yarn. This will be used to sew the two ends of the scarf together with a tapestry needle. (Or you can use the crochet hook and slip stitch the ends together).
Lay the scarf flat and fold the rectangle so the short edges meet. Keep the lines matched up sew the ends together.
Weave the needle through a two yarn loops on one side go across to the other edge and pull the yarn through the loops. Now put the needle through two loops on this side, go across through two loops on the other side and pull the yarn through. Repeat this process until the ends have been seamed. Hint: once I have seamed the ends of the scarf once, I go back up and repeat the process. For me, the double seam is more secure and makes me feel better about nothing pulling loose.
Weave in the yarn ends and remove the excess yarn.
Adding the Faux Fur Rounds
Join the faux fur to a space between a HDC ST. Work a SC in each SP between a HDC around. After the last ST, Join with a SL ST to the first ST.
Repeat these stitches on the other side of the cowl.
Finishing
Weave in the yarn ends and remove the excess yarn.
