The crochet squares with the colors changing each round creates a pretty flower motif. I used four different colors of yarn to create this attractive look. Since this reminded me of a flower, I thought the solid color squares should be in a complimentary green color.

Each square is made separately, which makes this a wonderful project to make on the go. If you love to crochet, but are short on time, quick projects like are great.

In this homemade table runner pattern, you will find step by step instructions to help you make your own versatile motif.

Keep them as a square and they make great gifts for teachers, house warmings, wedding showers, co-workers, and friends as a coaster. Use a tapestry needle and yarn, weave through the stitches to sew them together and you end up with a beautiful table runner.

What Type of Yarn to Use for a Table Runner?

Let’s first consider a few things about our table decoration. I often think of a table runner as a lighter decorative covering for a table.

Decorating a table for a dinner party and means you will be placing hot bowls and plates on top of your center piece. Therefore, you may want to use a cotton yarn. However, if the yarn is too thin, there may not be enough protection for the center table.

Further, it should hold up well when washing by hand or machine.

With this in mind, I would recommend a cotton yarn from a medium worsted weight yarn and a cotton thread yarn. When using a lacy thread yarn for the visual of your table, I will place hot pads and trivets on top of the table cloth. It is a great way to ensure your table top is protected while providing a gorgeous visual for your entire table.

However, with that said, I have used an acrylic yarn and have had no problems to date. So, go ahead and try this pattern with the yarn you have on hand. It is amazing how the color of yarn and the weight of the yarn creates such a different look. I love them all!

Since you are joining individually made squares for this crocheted table runner, it is easy to make this in different lengths. Using my kitchen table, I like to get a visual look of the table with the squares arranged before joining them together.

This is one of those fun patterns to get the whole family involved in the design phase. It’s an easy way to dress up a bare table.

Directions: Simple Crochet Table Runner Pattern

Skill Level

This crochet pattern is great for an advanced beginner. You should be able to complete a treble crochet stitch.

Gauge

18 single crochet every 4-inches. However, the gauge is not critical to this pattern.

Size

4 1/2 X 4 1/2 – inches square. Make as many as you want and arrange them in the design you prefer.

The size of this table runner can easily be adjusted. It’s the perfect project to make on the go too. Since each square is made separately and joined in your desired layout, you can make this as large or small as you like.

Materials

Patons Grace number 3 light weight yarn in Cardinal, Blush, Lotus, and Ginger. Approximately 50 yards total for each square. If you are not able to find the yarn locally, you can find it here.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in a square.

This pattern starts with the magic circle or a chain 4 and a slip stitch into the first chain stitch to make a loop.

The first round is worked inside the beginning loop.

Chain 4 counts as a treble crochet.

This pattern can be made using a new color for each round or a solid color yarn.

Crochet Pattern Directions

Begin

Using the Ginger color yarn. Make a magic circle

Round 1

Work 12 SC inside the magic circle. Snug up the magic circle to form a smaller ring. Join with a SL ST into the first SC ST.

Round 2

I joined a new color Cardinal

If joining a new color, add the new color before starting this round.

[CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet). Work a TR in next 2 STs. CH 4 (counts as Treble Crochet). SL ST into the next ST]. Repeat between [ ] 3 more times. End with SL ST into first CH 1 SP.

If joining a new color, pull this yarn color through the loop and cut off the yarn leaving enough to weave in to secure.

Round 3

I joined a new color Lotus.

If joining a new color, add the new color to the 4^th CH ST of the beginning CH 4 of the previous row.

If not joining a new color, SL ST into each of the 4 CH STs until you get to the 4^th CH of the beginning CH STs of the previous row.

Continue with the pattern

[CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet). Work a TR in next 2 STs. CH 4 (counts as Treble Crochet). SL ST into the next ST. CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet), work 3 TR in the side of the CH 4 STs. SL ST into the 4^th CH of the next CH 4 STs]. Repeat between [ ] 3 more times.  End with a SL ST into the beginning ST.

Round 4

I joined a new color Blush.

If joining a new color, add the new color to the 4^th CH ST of the beginning CH 4 of the previous row.

If not joining a new color, SL ST into each of the 4 CH STs until you get to the 4^th CH of the beginning CH STs of the previous row.

Continue with pattern

[CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet). Work TR in next 2 STs. CH 4 (counts as Treble Crochet). SL ST into the next ST. CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet), work 3 TR in the side of the CH 4 STs. SL ST into the 4^th CH of the next CH 4 STs. CH 4 (Counts as Treble Crochet), work a TR in the next 3 STs. SL ST into the 4^th CH of the next CH 4 STs]. Repeat between [ ] 3 more times.  End with a SL ST into the beginning ST.

Finishing

Work a chain stitch, cut the yarn off leaving about a 12-inch tail. Draw the yarn through the chain stitch and pull snug. Use the yarn needle to weave in the yarn tail and snip off excess yarn.

Joining Crochet Squares

Arrange the squares until you find a placement that you like the look of for the table runner. Use the leftover yarn pieces to join.

I used a tapestry needle to join the coasters where they touch by just weaving the yarn back and forth. To get the yarn to the next spot, I just weaved the yarn through the crochet loops of the same color yarn until the next place where they joined.

Once all joined together, I weaved in the yarn end and removed the excess.
