One way to truly embrace the spirit of fall is by indulging in a classic cocktail with a seasonal twist. Enter a beverage that encapsulates the essence of autumn in every sip.

Seasonal Flavor

While apples are available year round in the grocery store, the fall season means pumpkins and apple season around here. We have apple orchards offering pick-your-own opportunities, for us, making this apple cider old fashioned cocktail in the fall has become a tradition.

Just like a traditional old fashioned there is sugar (or simple syrup), bourbon whiskey, and bitters . Since this cocktail has cider in it, there is a refreshing delicious sweetness to the drink. This makes it the perfect fall cocktail that’s great for any party.

Finding This Delicious Fall Cocktail Recipe

My niece has become quite the home chef. This recipe is one that she shared with me. The drink in the photo is hers too. She was done with her yard work and house cleaning. It was time for her to sit on her porch with her hubby and enjoy a fall drink while watching the sunset on the trees that are turning a beautiful color right now.

Her photo of this fall recipe turned out so much better than mine.

Just look at these fall trees. We love living out in the country. While the winters can sometimes be harsh, watching nature change with the seasons is amazing!

What’s an Old Fashioned?

An old fashioned is a classic cocktail made with bourbon whiskey, sugar, angostura bitters, and garnishes. In Wisconsin some bartenders also add a bit of cherry juice to the drink.

The garnish is often an apple slice, orange slice, pickled mushrooms, pickled asparagus, or olives depending on the pub making the drink itself.

Twist on a Traditional Old Fashioned

The drink can be changed up with a variety of flavors and in this case it is combined with cider. This adds flavor and it decreased the intense flavor of the Old Fashion. It’s such an easy recipe.

For years, I made the old fashioned mix at a local bar. There was sugar, cherry juice, and bitters, just to name a few of the ingredients. If you’re searching for something new and delightful for a special evening at home or a gathering with friends, here is a fun twist on the traditional old fashioned.

While we added apple cider to this recipe, a pear cider would add a refreshing taste to this irresistible drink.

Rather than the sugar, add maple syrup, which gives this an extra kick of sweetness. Make sure to use pure maple syrup, not the pancake syrup. There is a difference in the sweetness.

In place of the cherry juice, use apple cider. Real apple cider if you can get it. So easy and simple.

The perfect classic drink to enjoy with a few friends around a camp fire on fall chilly evenings. Make this for your game day guests and serve with a charcuterie board for easy entertaining.

Make just enough for a small glass or make enough to fill a mug.

Variations to Apple Cider Drink Recipe

Adjust the amount of ingredients to your taste buds. I added 1/2 cup of the fresh apple cider to my drink. Additionally, I increased the amount of maple syrup to 1 tablespoon too. I guess I must have a bit of a sweet tooth.

Use good Whiskey or Brandy. I used whiskey today; however, when having friends over, I have both on hand so everyone can enjoy this fall beverage just the way they like it.

Garnish with a slice or two of a crisp, good tasting apple.

Add a delicious orange slice as a garnish. I like to slice the orange and slice half way through the slice so I can rest the orange slice on the rim of the glass.

A cinnamon stick added can be used as a stir stick and help add a bit more subtle spice flavor.

Additional garnish ideas: maraschino cherries, pickled mushrooms or asparagus, pineapple chunk,

Thanksgiving Beverage Idea

This is a fun recipe to serve your family and friends on Thanksgiving and enjoy the fall flavors.

If you prefer not to have your drink over ice, just use a cocktail shaker. When ice is put in the shaker this allows for a quicker cooling of the drink before serving.

You know what? Since we can get real apple cider throughout the year, we serve this simple recipe on warm days in the summer too.
