Fun Bobble Stitch Crochet Throw
If you are looking for a crochet pattern that is fun to work, this one is perfect. Sometimes, when crocheting a blanket with the same stitch pattern throughout, the project can become boring.
Not this one, every few rows, if the colors are not Changing, the crochet stitch is therefore, it will keep you on you A-game.
Inspiration for This Christmas Crochet Afghan
A few months ago, I planned on crocheting two different Holiday style blankets. I consulted with my daughter. She had two different ideas in mind. For one, she picked out four yarn colors: a green, red, blue, and yellow.
She wanted the green yarn as the base so it would resemble a Christmas tree, then the red, yellow, and blue were to be the tree lights going through the blanket. It took me quite a bit of time and tries to get a pattern that I thought worked.
Here is a photo of that blanket and a link to the pattern if you are interested in making one too. (my daughter loved it…she said I nailed it).
I kept looking at the green and red yarn to plan a second Holiday blanket. She told me to use blue. I just could not visualize it.
Then she went on Pinterest to show me how many homes were beautifully decorated for the Holiday using hues of blue, white, and silver. Just picture a white Christmas tree with this bobble stripe blanket in gorgeous blues.
She picked out the royal blue, soft blue, and white. I did not have the correct silver color that she was looking for, so we looked online until we found the sparkly silver yarn.
Textured Crochet Blanket
We wanted the throw to have texture. For a few weeks, I kept thinking about the pattern. The texture is easy to achieve by using the Alpine stitch. Pair that with a row of bobble stitches for a fun element and it just all came together.
Crochet Bobbles
The addition of bobbles to this blanket is very each to achieve. If you are comfortable with the double crochet stitch, you have the skills to master the bobble stitch. The bobble crochet stitch is a simple method of crocheting six double crochet stitches together.
Since the bobble is crocheted in the same color as the single crochet stitches in the row, it makes this row a bit easier because I am not carrying a different color of yarn through the stitches.
Alpine Stitch for Texture
If you are new to the Alpine crochet stitch, it is a combination of a row of front post double crochet stitches that are alternated with a row of single crochet stitches. This creates texture on one side and a flat pattern on the other side.

Alpine Stitch Tutorial
There is a couple of rows of set up before you get started on the Alpine Stitch. Start with an even number of stitches, first row chain 1 (does not count as a stitch) single crochet in every stitch across and turn.
Row 2, chain 2 (counts as first DC) and double crochet in each stitch across and turn.
Next, Row 3, chain 1 (does not count as a stitch) single crochet in every stitch across and turn.
Row 4, chain 2, [front post double crochet in the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch] Repeat between [ ] across end with a double crochet.
Repeat rows 3 and 4.
- When repeating rows 3 and 4, if the stitch below is a DC, then FPDC in the ST SP, if it is a FPDC, then DC in the ST SP. In other words, every time there is a DC, you work a FPDC, every time there is a DC, work a FPDC. Alternating those two stitches across the row.
- The next row is a SC.
Bobble Stitch – Double Crochet 6 Together (DC6TOG)
Yarn over, insert the hook and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. [Yarn over and insert the hook into the same space and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook]. Repeat between [ ] four more times for a total of 6. Complete the bobble stitch by yarning over and pulling through all seven loops on the hook.
Double Crochet (DC)
Yarn over, insert the hook and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Front post stitches are raised crochet stitches on the surface of the fabric facing you. Note: Because a post stitch is shorter than a normal stitch, you make the turning chain with one chain stitch less than the normal turning chain requires. Yarn over, insert the hook from front to back between the posts of the first and second double crochet of the row below.
Then insert the hook from the back to the front between the posts of the second and third stitches. (The hook should now be positioned horizontally behind the double crochet that you are working around). Yarn over, pull the yarn around the post of the stitch. There should now be 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Half Double Crochet (HDC)
Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops of the next stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. For height, this stitch is between the single crochet and double crochet.
Single Crochet
Insert the hook, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the two loops on the hook.

Gauge
4-inch X 4-inch swatch = 15 stitches X 4 rows of Double Crochet.

Pattern Notes for the Bobble Blanket
Turn at the end of each row.
This crochet pattern is a repeat of rows 5-10.
The first row is worked in the back bump of the initial chain row of chain stitches.
Each row should end with 136 stitches completed. (the bobbles are counted as 1 stitch).
Counting in this pattern is particularly important. If you are off by just one stitch, the bobble will be placed in the wrong location and it will be very noticeable.
There is a right side and wrong side to this blanket. You will know you might have done one too many rows of another stitch if your bobbles are popping out the wrong way. All of the textured stitches should show on the same side of the blanket.
The blanket rows started and ended with the soft blue for a symmetrical look.
Written in US Crochet Terms.

Round 1
I started with a new skein of the white. Join the white yarn (with the bobbles facing away from you), CH 1, SC all the way around with 3 SC in each corner ST. (On the sides of the blanket, try and space out the SC evenly). End the first round with a SL ST into the first SC.
Round 2
CH 2 (counts as the first HDC), HDC in each ST around with 3 HDC in each corner ST. End with a ST ST into the to CH of the first CH 2.
Round 3
Repeat round 2
Round 4
CH 1, SC in the next 8 STs, Bobble ST in the 10th ST. [SC in the next 9 STs, Bobble ST in the 10th ST], repeat between [ ] around with 3 SC in each corner. Note: when counting stitches, the corner stitches were included. Therefore, wherever the 10th stitch ended up, that is where the bobble stitch was placed. Additionally, I ended up with 2 extra SC after the last bobble stitch I did in this round.
Round 5
Repeat round 2
Round 6
Repeat round 2
Round 7
CH 1, SC until you are in the middle of the previous row bobbles, complete a bobble. Then [SC in the next 9 STs, Bobble ST in the 10th ST], repeat between [ ] around with 3 SC in each corner. Note: when counting stitches, the corner stitches were included. Therefore, wherever the 10th stitch ended up, that is where the bobble stitch was placed. This round placed the bobble stitch between the bobbles from round 4.
Round 8
Repeat round 2
Round 9
Repeat round 2
