Easy Crochet Coaster Pattern
This beginner crochet pattern is Pretty and useful. Full tutorial on how to make your own colorful crochet sunshine coaster. Use different colors and create different looks by changing the colors for your own unique style.
Cotton Yarn is Recommended
These pretty colored coasters are made from cotton yarn. While you can use an acrylic yarn, I think that the cotton yarn is the best yarn for this pattern. It works much better at absorbing the moisture from your drink. There are so many beautiful colors of cotton yarn that would be perfect for this project.
Frugal DIY Idea
Make a whole set of easy crochet coasters. You don’t have to start with new skeins of cotton yarn. A great way to use up worsted weight yarn. This is a yarn stash buster crochet pattern. I was able to use 4 skeins to make 8 of the larger coasters and 8 of the smaller coasters with leftover yarn.
These would also be a great gift idea to give for a co-worker or teacher or even a wedding shower gift for the participants. Pair this with a mug or some other beverage container for a nice gift set as a mug rug. If you are like me, when you receive something handmade, I like it even more. It’s a great addition to any gift bag.

Pattern Notes
This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
The pattern is worked in the round.
You can start with the magic circle if you want to. However, I started this pattern with chain stitches and a slip stitch back into the first chain to form a circle.
Round 1 stitches are worked inside the circle.
The smaller coaster is just the first two rounds, the larger coaster is four rounds.
Begin with CH 6 SL ST into first CH to form a ring
Round 1:
CH 3 and work 19 DC in circle. SL ST into top CH 3 space.
Round 2:
CH 3, DC in next ST, CH 2, DC in next ST, DC in next ST. *CH 2, DC, DC* repeat from * to * ending the round with a SL ST into the top of the CH 3 SP.
Round 3:
SC, CH 2, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in previous row CH 2 SP* repeat from * to * ending the round with a SL ST into the top of the CH 2 SP.
Round 4:
SC, complete 7 DC in the previous row CH 2 SP. *SC in the SP between the previous row 2DC. Complete 7 DC in the previous row CH 2 SP* repeat from * to * ending the round with a SL ST in to the starting SC.
Finishing:
Cut the yarn leaving about 10 inches on the yarn. Pull the yarn through to the last stitch and to the back of the project. Use the tapestry needle weave in the yarn working in a few different directions. Cut off excess yarn. Enjoy your handmade project!
Changing Color Hint
When changing color, pull the loop of the new color through the previous color loop. Pull the previous color loop snug. Continue crocheting with the new color of yarn. I have found that for this type of project it conceals the color change the best.
Color Rows for the Four Colorful Crochet Sunshine Coaster Patterns
For this first smaller crochet coaster, the first two rows are all sunshine yellow. The third row is black currant.
This larger coaster has one additional row of the black currant.
The smaller coaster shown has one row of the bright orange. The second row is the sunshine yellow. The third row is black currant.
The larger coaster has one additional row of the black currant.
