Homemade BBQ Recipe

I developed a recipe years ago when I decided to make BBQ ribs only to find out that we did not have all of the ingredients. Well, when you live in the country and the store is not open 24/7, you learn to improvise, and that is just what I did.

My recipe uses equal parts of grape jam and Open Pit BBQ sauce. Who knew what a great combination that would be?

Daughter’s Version of BBQ Ribs

My daughter decided to try her hand at making BBQ ribs. Of course, she knows the easiest way is to do the cooking like mom does.

She cooks the meat in the slow cooker and finish them off in the oven with a glaze. She made her ribs and they are delicious too. The link for her recipe is further down.

Two Delicious Versions of BBQ Ribs in the Slow Cooker

No matter which way we make them, they are both delicious, my version is a bit sweeter. My daughter’s version has a bit of a kick. Not too much though, because I am a bit sensitive to too much heat.

Rib Cooking Hints

We coat the ribs in flavorful spices that you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet and let the slow cooker do all the work. Cook until the ribs are tender, then transfer to a baking sheet. (I would recommend lining it with tin foil too if you want very little mess to clean up).

Brush on the sauce that you choose and caramelize the ribs under the broiler for a few minutes. We think that doing a second coat of BBQ sauce doesn’t hurt. So, we brush on a second coating, broil a bit more and enjoy.

My recipe is below, but my daughter’s recipe for Crock Pot Dr. Pepper Ribs is on her website.

This is another easy recipe for BBQ Ribs. She does a wonderful job on Ribs and it is her husband’s favorite. We hope your family enjoys the Slow Cooker BBQ ribs as much as ours does.

text ingredients

Instructions

  • Cut each rack of ribs so that it will fit into your slow cooker. Stand the ribs along the walls of a large oval (or round) slow cooker with the meaty sides facing outward. Sprinkle on the salt and pepper. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, until the ribs are tender. (If you want the ribs done sooner, turn the slow cooker on high and cook for 4 to 6 hours). It is easy to tell if the ribs are done as the meat will start to separate from the ribs when you move a rib bone.
  • When the ribs are done cooking, prepare the sauce. Mix the grape jelly and the Open Pit BBQ Sauce together with a whisk. If you like more sauce, it is easy to make more, just remember that it is equal parts.
  • While you are making the sauce, pre-heat the broiler. Once the sauce is made, Line a baking pan with foil. Using a tongs and a spatula, remove the ribs from the slow cooker and place the meaty side down on the baking sheet. Spoon or brush the sauce over the ribs and place under the broiler approximately 8 inches below the broiler to cook for 4-5 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and carefully turn over the ribs and coat the meaty side now with the sauce. Place back under the broiler for 4-5 minutes. If you desire a second coat of BBQ sauce, coat the ribs one more time and put back under the broiler for 4-5 minutes.
  • If you would like to serve the ribs cut into smaller rib sections, let the ribs set approximately 5-10 minutes tented before cutting and serving. However, if you are like our family, you will use the tongs and take the rib sections right off the baking sheet and place on your plate to eat.
