Soft and Sweet Textured Velvet Crochet Blanket Pattern

This soft and sweet textured velvet crochet blanket feels like it should be used in an expensive hotel SPA. Use modern crochet stitches paired with a Bernat Velvet yarn to crochet this luxurious throw.

Fun Yarn Colors and a Textured Crochet Stitch

This crochet blanket is soft and snuggly with the yarn, and we chose fun colors to make this one in. Paired with a crochet stitch that has lots of texture. What is nice about this stitch choice for this blanket is that it helps the velvet yarn not worm out of place, which it is known for.

Soft and Squishy Afghan

The combination of front post double crochet and back post double crochet paired with this silky yarn create a soft and squishy Afghan. When my daughter ran her hands across this blanket, she snuggled her face against the yarn. She said the fluffy and soft blanket was the plushest feeling one yet. We think it is because of the added texture created by the crochet stitches and the fluffy yarn. Pair this bulky yarn with the right stitch and you have a winner.

Chunky Crochet Baby Blanket

This would make a wonderful baby blanket with the squishy feel and the bright, clean colors. If you wanted this for a boy blanket, I would swap out the pink yarn for blue yarn. This luxurious velvet yarn Afghan would make a wonderful gift for anyone.

Handmade Weighted Blanket

As I was working on this blanket, I realized it does have a little bit of weight to it and along with the plushness of this afghan, it would make a nice handmade weighted blanket. While it is not super heavy, the little extra weight does have its benefits and it does not cost nearly as much as some weighted blankets that cost over $100.

You might have never heard of a weighted blanket before and are unfamiliar with the benefits of a weighted blanket. Some people find that their sleep quality is much improved by using weighted blankets as they reduce stress and help you get some much needed rest.

How to Crochet with Velvet Yarn

As I was crocheting this Afghan, I loved the warmth and softness of it on my lap. If you have ever been thinking of trying to crochet a blanket using velvet yarn, this is a pattern with lovely results.

I have made a few velvet yarn blankets now and learned a few tips and tricks about what works. You can find a few great tips when working with this Bernat Velvet, or a really any yarn similar like a chenille yarn.

While the yarn is soft and fluffy, it also has a few unique characteristics. Learn how to crochet with velvet yarn and have beautiful results. Crocheting a blanket using a chunky velvet yarn is probably the most luxurious feeling Afghan that I have made yet.

Here are the best practices: Check your stitches every few rows when crocheting with this chunky velvety yarn. If you do find that a stitch has loosened up, it is much easier to remove a few rows of stitches versus the whole thing.

It is important to have a tighter tension on the yarn. If you tend to crochet loosely, you might get better results to go down a hook size from what is recommended. This can help create a tighter stitch and keep all the stitches in place.

Other Crochet Blankets Using Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn

As you can see from the number of blankets that I have crocheted recently, I loved the feel of the yarn so much that I purchased a large box of it. The fun part was coming up with crochet stitches that worked with the yarn and looked great too.

Along with this free crochet pattern, I have included links to three other crochet patterns using velvet yarn. Each one uses different stitches.

Making a luxurious velvet yarn throw can be done successfully. Once I had a chance to work with this yarn, I was gliding along effortlessly as I made the velvet yarn crochet blanket.

I just love how easy this pattern worked up. The lovely bobble stitches add a bit more visual appeal. It is warm without being too heavy. Pair the half double crochet and the bobble stitch in this chunky crochet velvet bobble blanket pattern.

This crochet velvet warm blanket is made with a classic v-stitch. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize as it features a repeat of row three. To make this blanket even more beginner friendly, there is no border. The edges of this pattern square up nicely and the fluffy and soft texture of this blanket take center stage.

Easy Two Row Repeat Pattern

The free pattern is a two-row repeat consisting of a row of single crochet, which ads a bit of stability to the entire project. The next row uses a special stitch pattern alternating the front post double crochet and back post double crochet stitches.

Pattern Notes

The chain 1 in the single crochet row does not count as a stitch.

Chain 2 counts as a double crochet at the beginning of the alternating front post double crochet and back post double crochet row.

Turn at the end of each row.

The front post double crochet and back post double crochet stitches are worked in the double crochet stitches that are two rows below. However, if the stitch in the row below was a BPDC, then work a FPDC. If the stitch in the row below was a FPDC, then work a BPDC. This will create a squishy texture for this blanket.

Pattern is written in US Terms.

Crochet Border

I used a new skein of Cuddly Cloud for the border and used about three quarters of it.

Crochet Border Tips

Use a slip stitch to join yarn onto the crochet hook. I joined the white yarn a few stitches away from a corner. Insert the crochet hook, yarn over and bring the yarn through the loop on the hook. Use the slip stitch to snug up the stitch.

When working on the sides for round 1,  I worked 1 SC in the CH 2 SP and 1 SC in the SC SP. On the ends, I worked a SC in each SC ST. Join with a SL ST into the beginning CH 1 SP to end the round.

Rounds 2-6 work the last stitch (HDC) in the SP between the first HDC and CH 1 ST, SL ST into the top of the first HDC ST. This will help keep the beginning and ending STs looking like the rest of the stitches in the border.

When working the half double crochet stitches for rounds 3 – 6, the crochet stitches are worked between the previous for half double crochet stitch.

Begin

Round 1

CH 1 (Does not count as a ST) SC in each ST around with 3 SC in each corner ST.

CH 1 (Does not count as a ST) HDC in each ST around with 3 HDC in each corner ST. End with a HDC in the SP between the first HDC and CH 1 ST, SL ST into the top of the first HDC ST. This will help keep the beginning and ending STs looking like the rest of the stitches in the border.
