Double Crochet Puff Stitch Heart Crochet Blanket, Easy Repeat

Learn how to crochet a puff stitch heart blanket with an easy one row repeat. This free crochet pattern includes step-by-step video tutorials for both right and left-handed crocheters.

This simple yet stunning design is perfect for adding a personal touch to any room or gifting it to a loved one. I made this extra-large blanket for my tall nephew, designed with plenty of length so it can wrap around his feet and still reach up to his neck. It’s wonderfully cozy for snuggling without being too bulky. It also works perfectly as a bed blanket.

Double Crochet Puff Stitches

The puff stitch creates a lovely, raised texture, resembling hearts across each row, making this blanket not only homey but also full of charm.

For this blanket, I used rows of Double Crochet stitches and Double Crochet Puff Stitches worked in pairs. It creates a sweet, subtle heart-like pattern across the fabric. Each “heart row” is separated by double crochet stitches. Giving the design a lovely balance of texture and softness. This pattern allows the hearts to stand out while keeping the blanket beautifully drapey and comfortable.

Easy One-Row Repeat Crochet Pattern

What I love about this pattern is how easy it is to create. It’s made with a one-row repeat that any confident beginner can master. The puff stitch is simple to learn, and because the pattern repeats so easily, you’ll be able to crochet a beautiful blanket without feeling overwhelmed.

Plus, with its soft, soothing colors, it’s a perfect addition to any nursery or living space. It’s a pattern that’s as enjoyable to crochet as it is to use.

Yarn for Easy Crochet Heart Blanket

I used a #3 weight gradient yarn for this blanket to showcase the soft heart texture as the colors transition from one shade to the next. If you’d like a bit more warmth and squish, a #4 weight yarn is a great alternative. Whether you choose gradient, variegated, or solid colors, this pattern works up beautifully and makes a thoughtful handmade gift for babies, kids, or anyone you want to wrap in something special.

Pattern Notes

Written in US terms.

You can find a video tutorial for both a left and right hand crocheter after the written pattern.

For the first double crochet in each row, you can work a chain 3 or a stacked single crochet stitch for the first stitch. This helps reduce the gap between the first stitch and the rest of the stitches in the row.

Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through both loops that are currently on the hook. (The first chain stitch is complete).

Double Crochet Stitch (DC)

Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Double Crochet Puff Stitch (DCPuff)

Keep a loose tension when working the double crochet puff stitch. Otherwise, it will be difficult to get your crochet hook through all the loops at once.

Begin. Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. You have now made an incomplete double crochet. At this point, there should be 2 loops on the hook.

In the same stitch. Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. At this point, there should be 3 loops on the hook.

Repeat one more time. Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. At this point, there should be 4 loops on the hook.

Finish the double crochet puff stitch by doing a yarn over and drawing the hook through all the loops on the hook.

Chain 1 to close. This keeps all the loops together and secures the puff stitch.

Making Larger Puff Stitches

If you’d like an extra-full, ultra-puffy stitch, simply repeat the process of adding incomplete double crochet stitches into the same stitch up to 5 times (or more, if you wish). Keep in mind, the more repeats you add, the thicker the stitch becomes. Which can make it a bit trickier to insert your hook into that same space multiple times.

Stacked Single Crochet Stitch (SSC)

Chain 1, insert the hook in the first stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops (Single Crochet Complete). Then insert the hook into the bottom loop of the single crochet stitch you just made. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops. This completes the stacked single crochet stitch.

Begin Crochet Pattern

Place a slip knot on your crochet hook. Work a starting chain using stitch multiple is 13 + 11.

Here are starting chains for 5 different widths.

  • 40 inches = 141 Chain Stitches

  • 60 inches = 206 Chain Stitches
  • 70 inches = 232 Chain Stitches
  • 80 inches = 258 Chain Stitches

Row 1

SC in the 2nd ST from the hook and in each ST across. Turn

Row 2

You can start this row with a CH 3 or the SSC ST. I did the SSC ST.

Start with a SSC. (Counts as a DC ST). Work 1 DC in the next 9 STs. Next, SK the next ST. In the next ST work (DCPuff, CH 1, DC Puff). [SK the next ST. DC in the next 10 STs. SK the next ST. In the next ST work (DCPuff, CH 1, DC Puff)]. Repeat between [ ] across. End with 1 DC in each of the last 10 STs. Turn

Row 3

Start with a SSC. (Counts as a DC ST). Work 1 DC in each of the next 9 STs. [SK the first DC Puff ST, in the CH 1 SP work (DCPuff, CH 1, DC Puff). SK the next DC Puff ST. Work 1 DC in each of the next 10 STs]. End with 1 DC in each of the last 10 STs. Turn

Rows 4 and Beyond

Repeat Row 3.

Rows for 6 different lengths

  • 40 inches = 59 Rows
  • 50 inches = 74 Rows
  • 60 inches = 89 Rows
  • 70 inches = 104 Rows
  • 80 inches = 119 Rows
  • 90 inches = 134 Rows

Final Row

CH 1 (Doesn’t count as a ST). SC in the first ST and in each ST across.

Finishing

Use the tapestry needle to weave in the yarn tails on the back side of the work. I like to weave back and forth 3 to 5 times. Cut off the excess yarn.
