The double crochet stitch is considered by many to work up the quickest. Since this pattern pairs the double crochet stitch with a soft bulky yarn, it works up super fast.

Note. I normally wouldn’t suggest a chunky yarn for this smaller size. However, the squishy and soft factor outweighs the bulkiness of this blanket. It will keep baby warm without being too heavy.

Another nice thing about this easy pattern is that along with the simple stitches, there are no color changes. Less yarn to weave in.

I purchased an entire box of this fluffy yarn that was on sale a few months ago. By box I mean about 20 skeins. Talk about a yarn haul. However, it was not until the yarn actually showed up that I fully understood what the yarn was like.

How Much Yarn to Crochet a Baby Blanket?

On average, a small to medium-sized baby blanket might require around 700 to 1500 yards of yarn if using worsted weight yarn. However, the amount of yarn you’ll need to crochet a baby blanket can vary widely depending on several factors, including the size of the blanket, the stitch pattern you’re using, the thickness of the yarn, and your crochet tension.

A typical 3.5 oz skein that has 220 yards and it will take 3-7 skeins to crochet a baby blanket.

Keep in mind that it’s always a good idea to buy slightly more yarn than you think you’ll need, just to be safe. It’s easier to return any unused skeins/balls than to run out of yarn mid-project and try to match the dye lot later, which can be challenging.

This yarn Baby Soft Boucle is considered a 5 bulky. There are lots of little loops. It took me a few days of pondering how this yarn could be used.

I think this was a perfect way. Make a blanket!

As you can see in the photo below, the stitches are a bit hard to see. That is why the first row is the hardest, but after that, the blanket works up very quickly.

First Row

When crocheting the first row, I tugged a bit on the beginning chain stitches to see where to insert my crochet hook for the next set of stitches. Make sure that you have good lighting for this first row. Once this row is complete, it is easy to see right where to insert your hook as it is between to double crochet stitches.

Just look at the thick, fluffy results! So soft and cuddly.

Tips on Working with Fluffy Yarn

The first tip is to feel your way through the yarn. Once you do a few rounds you should be able to get a feel for where your crochet hook needs to go to achieve the stitches as you learn the new yarn and hook tension.

Additionally, when first working with this yarn, it might be best to avoid dark colors. They are hard to see the stitches in anyway and the fluffy yarn, makes it even more difficult. Lastly, use a stitch that works with the yarn, not against it.

Bonus Crochet Patterns

I chose to change skeins of yarn at the end of a row rather than in the middle a row or wherever the yarn ran out. Therefore, there was enough yarn to make a SPA set too. Same stitches, just different beginning stitches and rows.

This would be lovely for gifting too. Bonus, it is a great way to use those leftover scraps of yarn.

Special Stitch Pattern Used

Adjusting the Size of this Crochet Blanket

The size of this baby blanket is 22″ X 25″, which is perfect for a basinet. To adjust the size of this blanket, chain an even number until you reach the width you want. 

Work rows until your project is the length you want.

The size chart shows the starting chain and number of rows for some common blanket sizes. However, these are general guidelines as baby blankets come in all shapes and sizes. From rectangles, squares, hexagons, stars, and circles. Here are some popular baby blanket sizes:

• Lovey blanket 20 x 20 inches. Starting chain will be about 65-75 chain stitches. Plan on about 300 yards of yarn.

• Toddler Blanket or Lapghan 36 X 48 inches. Starting Chain is about 116-120 chain stitches. Plan on about 1,300 yards of yarn.

• Turn after each row.
• While the yarn it the softest yarn for a snuggly baby blanket, you can use any yarn for this free pattern. However, by using a different weight yarn, you will change the size of the blanket and may need to adjust your starting chain and rows.
• The first row is a bit challenging to see the chain stitches to crochet into; however, if you tug gently, they become visible for you to complete your crochet stitches for row 1. After row 1, this pattern is extremely easy as you are not working into the stitches unless otherwise noted.
