Ice cream Drinks in Wisconsin
Wisconsin is America’s Dairyland and it seems that we consume a lot of dairy in this state. We are lucky enough to have access to a wide variety of fresh dairy products.
One of those is ice cream and custards. According to Jeanette Hurt, in her article she explains how boozy ice cream drinks were popular in the 40’s, but went out of style in many parts of the country.
However, Wisconsin continues to have supper clubs dotted throughout the state serving ice cream drinks when many other parts of the country make these drinks with cream or milk.
Come and join me and find out how to make a few of these simple and fun retro dessert cocktails.
Make This Brandy Alexander Ice Cream Drink at Home
To be honest, I wonder why we didn’t try making this at home years ago. It is extremely easy. Just a few ingredients and a blender is all it takes.
Supper Club After Dinner Drink
There was a supper club in Antigo, Wisconsin that unfortunately had a fire many years ago. It was one of our favorite places to go eat with my husband’s family. Quite often, after our meal, we would take a seat at the bar and order our after-dinner dessert cocktail.
For us, the Brandy Alexander is still one of our favorites. As a family, we can all agree on this one, which makes it easier the bar tender as they can make one kind of ice cream drink.
When this is served, the bartender often garnishes the top with a little shake of nutmeg and add an almond or macadamia nut. To this day, we miss going to this supper club.
However, I have learned how to make this delicious drink at home. I always sprinkle on the nutmeg and if I want to be fancy, I will add one nut.
How to Make a Brandy Alexander with Ice cream
A Brandy Alexander is an ice cream drink that has a hint of almond flavor.
Ingredients in a Brandy Alexander
Typically, along with the vanilla ice cream, this is made with two other ingredients.
Crème de Cacao. This is a chocolate flavored liqueur with hints of vanilla. The liqueur is formulated in a dark and clear variety. It is less sweet and thick than chocolate liqueur.
Brandy. Use the brand of brandy that you prefer. If you prefer Whiskey, by all means, go ahead and substitute that. I have had this drink with both, and they are both a delicious dessert cocktail.
Substitute Milk or Cream for the Ice Cream. I realize that Wisconsin is a bit unique in our ice cream consumption. Might be all the fresh dairy products available. Therefore, if you prefer, the ice cream can be substituted for milk or heavy cream. It is lovely served in a cocktail glass and sprinkled with the nutmeg.
Tips for the Best Results When Making a Dessert Cocktail
- I like the drink on the thicker side like a milkshake, but for a thinner consistency, you can add more alcohol or even a little milk or cream.
- Use a good quality vanilla ice cream that you like.
- Use a blender for the quickest and easiest option, although you can mix the drink by hand if you have to.
You will need a blender to mix the ice cream and other ingredients. They are quick to make with just a few ingredients.
Be careful, you might want to stay home and eat so you can make your own after dinner drink just the way you like it. Keep some ice cream in the freezer.
Non-Alcoholic Version of the Brandy Alexander Ice Cream Drink
Whenever I share about a delicious drink that has alcohol in it, I try and figure out a great tasting recipe that is a non-alcoholic version.
I would still start with vanilla ice cream. Or you could use milk, cream, or melted vanilla ice cream.
For a non-alcohol substitute for Crème de Cocoa, use 3 tablespoons water and 3/4 teaspoon of chocolate extract. Another alternative is 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup, which is a bit sweeter than the extract. Add 1/4 Teaspoon of vanilla extract for the hints of vanilla that are in the Crème de Cocoa.
One more option, vary the flavor and use other flavors of extracts, almond, coffee or hazelnut.
