Make your own hair scrunchie with yarn scraps. Make this with blanket yarn or medium weight yarn for two totally different looks.
If you can single crochet and treble crochet, you can make these cute hair scrunchies. They are super easy, and I can make one in under 20 minutes.
It’s a fun project and they make a great handmade gift. Plus, they are a great way to use up yarn scraps. You can use a wide variety of different yarn. Bernat blanket yarn, Bernat velvet yarn, Caron Simply Soft, A soft cotton yarn like Lion Brand Coboo yarn, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton are just a few I have used to make these.
90’s Fashion
Hair scrunchies are popular again. Fashion is cyclical and they are back in fashion. My daughter likes to crochet around hair ties as it helps reduce hair breakage when putting her hair up. Add a little handmade flair to your wardrobe, it’s a fun way to dress up a ponytail or messy bun.
How to Make a Crochet Hair Scrunchie
It’s the perfect crochet pattern for beginners. There are a few different ways to make scrunchies using basic stitches. Today’s free pattern is showing you just one of those ways.
For this particular style, you can make a hair tie using just one round or two. Depending on your preference. Using an “ouchless” elastic hair tie, crochet a round of single crochet stitches. For the second round, you’ll be working treble crochet stitches. Secure the yarn ends and you are done. Your handmade hair scrunchie is ready for wearing, gifting, or even selling at a craft fair.
Crochet scrunchies are perfect for using both a medium weight yarn or a #6 super bulky yarn.

Pattern Notes

The first round of crochet stitches are worked around the elastic hair tie.
You can stop after round one or continue on to round two for a wider crochet ruffle on the hair scrunchie.
When weaving in the yarn ends, try and weave them up and down close to the starting and ending stitches. This way, they will not pull out when the hair elastic tie is stretched out.
When securing the bulky weight yarn ends, I just weaved the ending yarn close to the beginning yarn. Tie a square knot and snip off the excess yarn.
There is no need to turn at the end of each round.
