Even Moss Stitch Crochet Tutorial (Easy, Reversible Texture)

The Even Moss Stitch is an easy, textured crochet pattern that alternates slip stitches and half double crochets, creating a soft, modern fabric that’s perfect for scarves, blankets, and washcloths.

Once worked up, it forms a beautifully subtle texture with soft horizontal bars running across the fabric. It is fully reversible, making both sides just as pretty as the other.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a soft spot for stitches that look beautifully textured but don’t require a ton of brainpower to work up—and the Even Moss Stitch is exactly that kind of stitch.

This stitch creates a subtle, woven texture that feels cozy and polished all at once. It has just enough structure to look intentional, but still drapes beautifully, especially when worked in softer yarns.

I originally used a chunky yarn in my video tutorial because the stitch shows up so nicely. However, this stitch shines just as much in medium weight yarn. It gives you a slightly more delicate, refined finish while still keeping that signature texture.

What I especially love about the Even Moss Stitch is how rhythmic it becomes after just a couple of rows. Once you get going, it turns into a relaxing, almost meditative pattern—perfect for evenings on the couch or when you just want something simple and satisfying on your hook.

Whether you’re making a blanket, scarf, or even a cozy cowl, this stitch is a beautiful go-to that you’ll find yourself coming back to again and again.

Why You’ll Love the Even Moss Stitch

  • Beginner-friendly with simple repeats
  • Creates a soft, modern texture
  • Works up beautifully in both chunky and medium weight yarn
  • Easy to memorize (great for relaxing crochet time)
  • Creates a dense fabric—perfect for cotton yarn when making farmhouse-style washcloths, trivets, or spa sets
  • The alternating stitch height creates a naturally beautiful texture without complicated shaping or counting

What Can You Make with the Even Moss Stitch?

This stitch is incredibly versatile. Some of my favorite uses include:

  • Chunky throw blankets
  • Cozy scarves and cowls
  • Baby blankets
  • Washcloths or spa sets
  • Simple, modern home décor pieces

The finished fabric has soft horizontal bars and a lightly woven appearance. Because the stitch pattern alternates evenly, both sides look nearly identical—making it a fully reversible stitch.

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner

You should be comfortable with basic stitches like chain, slip stitch, and half double crochet.

Gauge

The gauge will depend on the yarn weight and crochet hook used.

Finished Size

The size will depend on the number foundation chain stitches and rows completed.

Varying the Size

To adjust the width, simply adjust your chains by any multiple of 2 + 1. To make the project longer or shorter, simply crochet more or fewer rows.

Materials

Yarn. For my samples I used number 6 chunky weight yarn and a number 4 medium weight yarn.

Crochet Hook. I used a size N 9.0mm crochet hook for the chunky weight and size I 5.5mm crochet hook for the medium weight yarn.

Note: You can use any weight yarn and the recommended hook size that can be found on the yarn band packaging.

Yarn & Hook Suggestions

  • Bulky Weight Yarn: Creates a bold, squishy texture (great for blankets and quick gifts)
  • Medium Weight Yarn (Worsted): Gives a more refined, classic look with beautiful drape

Hook size can vary depending on your yarn, but I recommend:

  • Going up a hook size if your slip stitches feel tight
  • Keeping your tension relaxed for the best texture

Crochet Stitches

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, insert the hook in the chain stitch, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. (The first chain stitch is complete).

Half Double Crochet (HDC)

Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops of the next stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. For height, this stitch is between the single crochet and double crochet.

Slip Stitch

Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops of the next stitch and pull up a loop. Pull this loop through the loop on the hook. Slip stitch complete.

Important Stitch Note (Don’t Skip This!)

For this stitch to work correctly:

👉 You will always place your HDC into the SL ST from the previous row
👉 And your SL ST into the HDC from the previous row

This is what creates that signature Even Moss texture. Once you see it, it clicks—and after that, you won’t even have to think about it.

Tips for Success

  • Keep your slip stitches loose—this makes the next row much easier to work into
  • If your edges look uneven, count your stitches at the end of each row
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch if you’re still getting the hang of it

Begin Even Moss Stitch Pattern

Place a slip knot on your crochet hook.

Chain any number of stitches in a multiple of 2 + 1.
