What Is an Asymmetrical Crochet Shawl?
An asymmetrical crochet shawl is a shawl designed so that its shape increases unevenly, creating a modern, angled silhouette. Instead of growing evenly on both sides like a classic triangle shawl, an asymmetrical shawl expands more on one edge than the other. This creates a distinctive slanted shape—often a sweeping triangle, boomerang curve, or elongated wedge.
Asymmetrical shawls are popular because they’re:
- Easy to wear — the long, tapered ends wrap effortlessly without bulk.
- Visually striking — the angled shape highlights color changes, stripes, and textured stitches.
- Beginner‑friendly — many patterns use simple increases worked consistently on one side.
- Yarn‑flexible — perfect for variegated yarns, gradients, or single skeins.
In short, an asymmetrical crochet shawl is all about intentional imbalance—a playful, modern twist on the classic shawl shape that drapes beautifully and shows off your stitches.
Ways to Wear This Crochet Wrap
This first view is showing the wrap styled as a poncho. Use a pretty brooch to hold the ends securely. If you wear this during Valentines, a beautiful heart pin would be lovely. This would also be a great Christmas Holiday accessory.

Crochet Wrap Style
With this view, the ends are brought around the front of the body. The size is large enough and light enough to wear as a wrap. I just love the flow of this beauty.

Back View of Crochet shawl
Sometimes, it is just nice to have a lovely shawl to wrap around yourself. Wear this with relaxing weekend wear.
In this view, I have part of the shawl rolled over at the neckline. As you can see, the length is still generous to keep you covered nicely. However, this is not so much coverage that you will be too warm and have a heaviness to it. Because of the light cotton yarn, and light pattern, it is has a graceful movement.

Swimsuit Cover Up
Below is a photo showing an attractive swimsuit cover up. I think this would be just the right amount of coverage for covering up on the beach. It might be called a sarong too. Just put around your waist and tie. Very easy and elegant addition to your wardrobe.

Off-the-Shoulder Shrug
We are up to styling idea number five. How about wrapping this around your body but off the shoulder on one side. You have great lacy coverage in a very modern look. As you can see from the photo, the ends of the shawl are crossed over each other over one shoulder. However, it might not stay in place very well unless it is pinned.

Easy Crochet Shawl
The ends of the shawl are arranged over the shoulder. I chose to have the red end of the shawl on the outside as I just loved the contrasting colors. Additionally, in this view, it really shows off the lacy crochet stitches.

Easy Crochet Scarf
The scarf is rolled and draped around the neckline. The ends are crossed behind the neck and placed in front of the shoulders. I kept the v-stitch hanging off on the end for a softer look. However, you may want to keep the end tucked in for a continuous rolled style.

Alternative Yarn Suggestions
The original yarn used for this crochet shawl pattern has since been discontinued, but there are many wonderful substitute yarns that will give you a similar lightweight drape and soft texture.
For best results, look for:
- lightweight #3 DK weight yarn
- cotton blends
- bamboo blends
- soft acrylic blends
- yarns with beautiful drape and flow
Here are a few yarn substitutions that work well for this shawl pattern:
Lion Brand Coboo
A soft cotton and bamboo blend that creates beautiful drape and a lightweight feel perfect for warm-weather shawls.
Hobbii Sultan
A lightweight cotton cake yarn with long color changes that works beautifully for asymmetrical shawls and wraps.
Scheepjes Whirl
A popular cotton and acrylic blend cake yarn known for stunning gradients and soft texture.
Caron Blossom Cakes
A soft lightweight yarn with subtle color transitions that gives the shawl a relaxed and airy appearance.
Lion Brand Mandala
An affordable self-striping yarn option that works well for creating colorful shawls with smooth drape.
Premier Cotton Fair
A cotton and acrylic blend that offers softness, breathability, and excellent stitch definition.
When substituting yarn, keep in mind that changing the fiber content or yarn weight may slightly affect:
- finished dimensions
- drape
- texture
- yarn requirements
If using a different yarn weight, adjusting the hook size may help you achieve a similar finished look.

Rows 5–12 create the repeating stitch pattern. Each row will increase by 2 stitches.
You will find the video tutorials below the written pattern.
Crochet Stitches Used
Chain Stitch (CH ST)
Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be woven in later.
Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.
Keeping the loop on the hook, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. (The first chain stitch is complete).

Double Crochet (DC)
Yarn over, insert the hook in a stitch and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

How to Block a Crochet Shawl
Blocking is one of the easiest ways to give your finished crochet shawl a polished and professional look. It helps even out stitches, improves drape, and opens up the stitch pattern so the texture and design really shine.
Because this shawl is made with a lightweight cotton blend yarn, blocking can make a noticeable difference in how soft and flowy the finished wrap feels.
Wet Blocking Method
- Fill a sink or basin with cool water.
- Gently soak the shawl for 15–20 minutes.
- Carefully squeeze out excess water without wringing or twisting.
- Roll the shawl in a clean towel to remove additional moisture.
- Lay the shawl flat on blocking mats or a clean towel.
- Shape the shawl to the desired dimensions and pin the edges in place if needed.
- Allow it to air dry completely before removing the pins.
Steam Blocking Method
If you prefer, you can lightly steam block the shawl instead.
- Lay the shawl flat and shape it as desired.
- Hold a steam iron a few inches above the fabric without touching the yarn directly.
- Allow the steam to relax the stitches.
- Let the shawl cool and dry completely before moving it.
