Make your own homemade taco seasoning mix. Just a few ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry can be combined to make your own spice mix. This has the best flavor and there are so many uses, so you just might want to make a larger batch. And, you can adjust your homemade version to your personal preferences in taste.
What Is Taco Seasoning?
Taco seasoning has warm, spicy, and smoky flavors. it is a seasoning mix that adds flavor to all sorts of dishes like tacos, soups, and casseroles.
Make Your Own Spice Mixes
It can be annoying when you are in the middle of a recipe and realize that you do not have an ingredient. Even more so when that ingredient is critical like a spice mix. Sometimes, driving to the store to pick up more is not an option.
Therefore, it is wonderful to have a few of your favorite spice mix recipes on hand to whip together in minutes.

Use Pantry Spices to Create Your Homemade Seasoning Blend
While store-bought packets are convenient, once you find out how easy it is to make your own spice blend, you’ll be mixing up your own.
With just Seven Ingredients you will be on your way to mixing up your own batch of seasonings. We always have these spices in our pantry chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Depending on how spicy you and your family like your dishes, use as little or as much as you want. Store in an airtight container.
Control and Vary the Taco Seasoning Mix Ingredients
You might even decide that you like making your own versus purchasing a pre-made spice mix.
If you prefer a bit more heat, add a bit of cayenne pepper.
On the other hand, if you prefer the taco seasoning to be a bit more smokey, add smoked paprika rather than sweet paprika.
Storing Seasoning Mixes
In general, any seasoning mix that you make will keep for 6 months and possibly up to a year when stored correctly. Store the spice blends in a dry place and in clean airtight containers like a spice jar. If you make a big batch, store in something like a mason jar. Just make sure that the containers have a good seal. Make sure to label the container with both the name of the mix and date.
This will help assure that you are using fresh spice mixes as you prepare your favorite meals.
Ways to Use Taco Seasoning
For years, I’ve made this Taco Soup Recipe from a local Restaurant Menu. This is one of the recipes when I was a cook there. It’s a delicious soup on the menu of one local eatery. Simple ingredients, yet so delicious. This would be a wonderful recipe to use your own taco seasoning mix.
What else can this be used for?
It’s not just for taco Tuesday. According to McCormick, a few ways I’ve never thought of is as a steak rub, for Crispy Taco Wings or added to a vinaigrette for a touch of zest. Even as a drink for a party, a Taco-Spiced Margarita!
We’ve come up with a few more ideas. Add to breaded chicken wings, cowboy beans, hamburgers and meatloaf, kabobs, sloppy joes, birria tacos, pico de gallo, and nachoes. Get creative and see how you can spice up your recipes a bit.
Determining How Much Spice Mix to Use
As a general rule of thumb, I start with 1-2 teaspoons of the taco seasoning mix. Use a clean teaspoon and taste the recipe. Add more as needed. The reason I say start with a few teaspoons first; once you add too much of any seasoning, it is very hard to undo. Therefore, start small and continue to add the seasoning until it is just right for you.
How Much is in a Packet of Taco Seasoning?
Most taco seasoning packets at the grocery store are 1 ounce, which equals 2 Tablespoons of seasoning mix.
