The Sober Granny Stitch is a simple and elegant with a beautiful texture and straight edges. The stitches line up perfectly, it looks so put together and organized. This creates a neat and aligned pattern that looks great for blankets, scarves, and other projects.
A modern look that uses basic crochet stitches. It is suitable for beginners who know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet. You can use any yarn and hook size you like, but I recommend using a medium weight yarn and a 5 mm hook for this tutorial. You will also need a pair of scissors and a yarn needle to weave in the ends.

Pattern Inspiration
A few months ago, I stumbled upon a video for the drunken granny crochet stitch. Along with the intriguing name, I found the stitch pattern to be just gorgeous. I made the ideal baby blanket using this simple drunken granny stitch.
After completing the blanket pattern, I went on a hunt to see if there was a sober granny. I saw this video from the crochet designer, Secret Yarnery as she worked on what she calls the Easiest Crochet Baby Blanket Ever. She had a lovely video tutorial where she made the sober granny baby blanket.
However, after a bit more research, I found that some crochet designers thought this stitch was the same as the straight box stitch. While it is very close, it starts with 3 Double Crochet in the 4th chain from the hook. Also, each slanted double crochet clusters consists of SC, Ch 2, and 3 double crochet whereas, this sober granny stitch uses SC, CH 2, and 4 double crochet. You can see why these stitch patterns would be used interchangeably.
Yarn Color Options
This stitch would look great using a solid color and variegated yarn. When using this type of yarn, you can use the Yarn Knot Join Technique to change skeins of yarn without having to weave in yarn ends. If you prefer to change color, I recommend adding the new color at the beginning of the row. However, you can make it in any yarn color you wish.
