I am sharing a decades old recipe for creamed tuna on toast. This probably originated in the depression era. However, it is still just an easy, delicious, and quick meal for any day.

Depression Era Recipe

This recipe came from the great depression era where times were tough and folks didn’t have a lot of money. Stretching those dollars as far as possible to feed your family was a necessity.

Just because the recipe is inexpensive doesn’t mean that it lacks taste. In fact, many folks still enjoy this meal and consider it a comfort food. Including me. I grew up on this meal.

Serving Options

This creamed tuna can be served over mashed potatoes, biscuits, buns, bread, cooked rice, or cooked pasta.  

Served as a Dip?

You might even be able to serve it as a dip for chips or crackers. I think it is really that good! Bet your guests will ask you for the recipe is you served it as an appetizer!

What type of canned tuna is used?

Today, I used Starkist; however, any canned tuna will work. Additionally, I prefer the tuna packed in water rather than oil.

While I grew up with the exact recipe below, some folks like to add 1/2 – 1 cup of frozen peas to this dish. If you decide to add the peas, I would add it when you add the tuna. Give everything a few minutes to warm through.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick Butter 1/2 Cup
  • 1/3 Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 3 Cups Whole Milk
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt to taste
  • 1/4-1/2 Tsp. Pepper to taste
  • 10 Oz. Canned Tuna packed in water 2 (5 oz. containers)
  • Toasted Bread for Serving

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the flour and stir with a fork or whisk to combine. it will become like a paste.

  • Add about 1/2 of the milk and stir to combine, then add the rest of the milk.

  • Continue stirring until it starts to thicken. Add the salt and pepper.

  • Add the tuna, liquid and all to the sauce. Stir and cook a few minutes until everything is heated through.
  • Toast your bread and serve this delicious, creamy tuna over your toast.
