What is a Table Runner?
Generally, a table runner is a narrow length of cloth laid on top of tablecloths or on a bare table. They can be used in a variety of ways.
Laid down the center of the table for a decoration, laid across the table to identify seating. Additionally, a runner can be used to carry out a theme and enhance the color scheme throughout your home décor.
Crochet Pattern to Use up Leftover Yarn
A table runner can be a fast, easy, and good use for leftover yarn.
Why Use a Table Runner?
So, you might be thinking to yourself that you do not even own a table runner, let alone use one. Well, years ago, the table runner was placed on top of the larger tablecloths to save from cleaning the entire cloth after each meal.
You can imagine how dirty a tablecloth can get with everyone spattering and spilling little bits of gravy, and other bits of food here and there.
Hence, the table runner was invented by someone smart. The smaller cloth is laid on top of the larger cloth to catch the spills and mess from the meals. It is much easier to pick up a smaller cloth and clean it.
While a lot of quilters make runners, this is only the second table runner that I have designed. Recently, it seems, we have been eating more family meals at the table. Having something handmade and beautiful just seems like a good thing right now.
Easy Crochet Pattern
If you are new to crochet, there are a few new crochet tips you might not be familiar with.
First off, this pattern does not start with the traditional chain stitch followed by the double crochet. Often, when I start a pattern this way, I feel that the chain stitches stretch and leave an unsightly gap. Therefore, this pattern starts with the No Chain Double Crochet.

In this method, when each stitch is worked, the chain stitch and double crochet are completed together. Here is a video tutorial on just completing the No Chain Double Crochet.

Secondly, when completing a double crochet in a project, the row will start with a chain 3. When doing this, sometimes, there is a gap between the first chain 3 and the first double crochet. Depending on what you are making, this can be very noticeable.
The Chainless Standing Double Crochet is a method of starting off that double crochet row without the gap. Learn how with this quick crochet tutorial. This crochet technique helps amp up the professional look of your crochet piece.
Additionally, since it is a table runner, people will be sitting at the table for longer periods and have ample opportunity to look at every stitch detail and evaluate your work. Therefore, I wanted the beginning stitch in each row to resemble all the double crochet stitches used throughout the row as possible.

13 stitches per 4 inches
Size
The finished size is approximately 15 inches wide X 27 inches long.
Altering Size
To alter the width, increase or decrease the initial No Chain Double Crochet by 1 stitch.

CH = Chain
CHSTDC = Chainless Standing Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
NCDC = No Chain Double Crochet
ST = Stitch
Pattern Notes
Alternative to the No Chain Double Crochet. Rather than complete the NCDC for 78 stitches. You could complete a Chain of 81. Then starting in the 4th CH from the Hook, work a DC in each ST across.
Number of rows per skein of yarn. With the first skein of yarn, I was able to work 14 full rows. There is a tiny bit of yarn left over. I didn’t want to join the yarn in the middle; therefore, I stopped and switched the yarn at the end of the 14th row.
Directions
Begin
78 NCDC across, turn.
Rows 2 – 28
Complete a CHSTDC in the first ST of the row. Complete a DC in each ST across, turn.
Finishing
Weave in yarn ends. Remove any excess yarn.
