What is Grenadine Syrup Used for?

This delicious red syrup is often used in non-alcoholic beverages both as a red coloring and to add a bit of sweet tart flavor. However, it is also a popular ingredient in cocktails as it gives the drink a deep red color to a pink hue depending on how much is used.

Add some to your next ice cream sundae or add some to a milk shake. Just a delicious sweetener that is both tart and a bit sweet.

What does Grenadine Syrup Taste Like?

It has kind of a tart yet sweet taste. However, since it is made from the pomegranate fruit, it tastes tart. The sugar sweetens up the tartness of the fruit.

Pomegranate Juice

A pomegranate is made up of hundreds of seeds that each contain the meat and juice of the fruit. The seeds are sweet and tart, and their deep red juice contains antioxidants too.

Once the seeds are removed from the fruit, they can be processed in the blender and strained to make the juice.

However, if you are not feeling like removing the seeds and making your own juice, this ingredient is available in most supermarkets. For this recipe, I just used a bottled pomegranate juice.

How to Make Grenadine Syrup

Simply boil pomegranate juice with sugar and lemon or, any other additional flavor you wish to add, until a syrupy consistency is reached. The longer that you simmer the liquid the thicker and more intense the flavors will be. It becomes almost more like a molasses than a syrup.

Place the pomegranate juice, sugar, and lemon juice in a 4-quart saucepan set over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Once the sugar has dissolved, simmer at a medium-low heat and continue to cook until the mixture has reduced to 2 cups. This takes approximately 50 minutes. It should be the consistency of syrup.

Grenadine in Cocktails

There has been many occasions that I have enjoyed a Tequila Sunrise. They are simple to make and pretty too. Just mix 1 ounce of tequila with 6 ounces of orange juice and 1 ounce of grenadine. Store bought grenadine seems to sit on top of the orange juice; however, the homemade grenadine seems to sink down the drink eventually to the bottom.

No matter, it is still tasty.

My husband likes adding the syrup to lemon-lime soda.

How Long Does Homemade Grenadine Last?

You might be thinking that this syrup will not spoil quickly. While this is true, in time, it can spoil and here are some signs that you should watch for; foul odorchange in the consistency of the syrup, or molding near the cap or on top of the liquid. If in doubt, it is best to toss rather than use the syrup if it has been stored in the refrigerator for a while.

When properly stored, homemade grenadine can stay fresh up to 3 months in the refrigerator.
