Add a DIY pop of color to your home with this chunky crochet placemat. Handmade gifts throughout the Holidays are my favorite gift to get and give. These placemats are not only pretty, but they are a useful gift. I love making quick and easy crochet patterns.
Crocheted with super bulky yarn, these pieces work up fast and have that soft, chunky texture everyone loves during the winter season. The bold red and white colors give them classic Christmas appeal, while the simple pattern makes them fun and relaxing to crochet. Even better, you can make the complete set in just a few hours.

Make a Christmas Table Setting
Whether you’re sipping cocoa, hosting Christmas dinner, or looking for a fun holiday craft, these chunky ornament coasters and round placemats bring warmth and cheer to your home. A coordinated set – placemats and coasters go together nicely. Here is a crochet pattern for Chunky Christmas Ornament Coasters. They are easy crochet patterns and quick to make. The complete set can be made in just a few hours or less.
I used chunky yarn for this project because it makes very quick work out of the crochet pattern. While you can use a thinner yarn, or a smaller hook will mean more rows or a smaller placemat. I find this chunky yarn easier to work with than thin yarn. This yarn also has a beautiful smooth look that I just love.

Crochet Stitches
Chain Stitch (CH)
Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.
Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.
Keeping the loop on the hook, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. You’ve just made a chain stitch. Continue yarning over and drawing the yarn through the loop on the hook to make more chain stitches.

Double Crochet (DC)
Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
