Garlic Toast to Finish of a Meal
Garlic bread has just the right amount of buttery, garlic flavor with just the right amount of softness and crunch. It is just perfect to soak up every last bit of sauces and flavors on your plate.
Homemade versus Store Bought Garlic Bread
Sometimes garlic toast is just the perfect accompaniment to a meal. While I do love the store-bought garlic bread that is already prepped that just has to have the loaf of bread baked in the oven, I don’t always have room in my freezer.
It is so easy to make, but it seems that unless I know I am having company for a special meal, I don’t take up the room in my freezer with the prepared garlic bread. But I do love it.
Often, My drive to and from work is just over half an hour; therefore, I generally start planning what I will feed the family then. I know, you would think that I would be a better planner. Well, not so.
However, I do plan ahead and make sure that my pantry and freezer is stocked full of good food. This helps me make such a wide variety of meals for my family relatively quickly too, I might add. Therefore, if I want to have garlic toast, I see what is on hand and go from there.
The garlic toast in the photo is made from French Brioche Baguette. I purchased it at one of our local grocery stores as a day-old sale. and popped it into the freezer.
What to Serve with Garlic Bread?
The first thing that comes to mind are pasta dishes. It seems pasta and garlic bread fit like a hand and glove.
Today, When I got home from work, I took the steak and bread out of the freezer. Within 50 minutes, this is the meal I had on the table for my family. Fresh Green Beans with garlic, Steak with fried mushrooms, and garlic, mustard buttery sauce. Of course, the bread was just the perfect side this evening.
If I had it on hand, I would have put shredded cheese, fresh garlic minced, and chopped fresh parsley for best flavor. I really used just a few simple ingredients for a delicious savory toast.
Note, if I think ahead I do buy the loaf of French Bread from the store so I can bake it right from frozen for a quick weeknight family meal too. I freeze this whole loaf. however, you don’t have to freeze the whole loaf. You can cut it up into bread slices and wrap them in aluminum foil and then place in an airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag to freeze. That way, you can bake a few pieces at a time.
Family loved this meal.
Asiago Flax Seed Bakery Bread
We are lucky enough to have a local bakery that makes a wide variety of flax seed breads. The one we had with this meal had Asiago Cheese incorporated into the bread.
Oh my! So hard to have just two pieces.
I served this with a delicious creamy chicken skillet dinner. It was just perfect together.
Restaurant Garlic Bread
When I worked as a cook in a restaurant, we made garlic bread every evening for guests. With or without cheese. We used french bread loaves cut in half slathered with lots of butter and garlic powder.
If we did add cheese to the bread, it was always mozzarella cheese. Be careful when adding the cheese as it sticks to everything. Therefore, we were careful to pile it high only on the bread. We put it on a wire baking sheet and placed it under the broiler for a few minutes. Delicious.
Well, you can get this same restaurant garlic bread at home anytime you want.
At home, I like to put my garlic bread on a sheet pan. However, if I want to crisp both sides, you can use a pizza pan with lots of holes.
Fresh Garlic or Garlic Powder
If you rub fresh garlic on the bread before putting your butter on, it leaves a delicious garlic taste. You could even mince the garlic and add it to the bread on top. While the bread bakes in the oven, the garlic will develop a lovely, rich flavor.
However, if you are short on fresh garlic, the garlic powder works just fine. Often, that is how I end up making my garlic bread. Butter the bread you are choosing to use, sprinkle on the garlic powder, add cheese if you like, and bake. Just scrumptious.
Cheesy Garlic Bread is Scrumptious
Sometimes, at home, I have used Parmesan Cheese along with Mozzarella Cheese. Try a few cheeses and see what flavors you and your family enjoy.
How Long Does Garlic Bread Last?
Garlic bread stored in the refrigerator or the counter in an airtight container will last up to 3 days. It is actually recommended to store baked goods like this at room temperature. Placing it in the refrigerator will cause it to dry out, become stale and soggy.
Reheating Instructions
To reheat leftover garlic bread, just preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the bread on a baking sheet. Wrap the loaves or individual slices in foil as it will keep the previously cooked edges from becoming too brown or burned. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Until hot and crispy again.
How to Freeze Garlic Bread?
It is best to freeze the prepared bread before baking with the garlic butter mixture spread onto the bread.
Therefore, add the prepared butter garlic spread to the bread. And place it on a parchment lined baking sheet in a single layer and freeze until solid. This takes about one hour.
When frozen, remove from the baking tray and place in freezer safe containers. Heavy duty freezer bags work nicely for this. Wrap each half in aluminum foil before placing in the bag. Pro Tip. If you slice the bread and place a few slices in the foil at a time and place in the bag. It is easy to remove just a few and back.
Safely freeze for up to 3 months.
How to Cook Frozen Bread
Baking frozen bread is simple. Just remove from the freezer and the plastic bag. If you wrapped it in foil, you can keep it right in the foil and place on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes. It will be warmed through at this point. Pro Tip. If you did not wrap it in foil first, line your baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean up.
The best way to get a slightly crunchy and golden edge to your bread. Remove from the aluminum foil and place back on the baking sheet. Broil on medium-high for 1-2 minutes until golden brown with crispy edges. Pro Tip. This is also a great time to add shredded cheese if you like cheese on your garlic bread. If you prefer a softer garlic bread, skip the broiler.
Use the bread you have on hand to make amazing garlic bread right at home. Just the perfect pairing with so many homemade meals. Give it a try. No need to purchase pre-made.
Making the Garlic Toast Recipe in an Air Fryer
It is so easy to make in an air fryer. Just place bread in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Preheat to 350 degrees and air fry for 5 to 10 minutes, until golden and crispy on the top and sides.
I find that the dry crust of the bread does not stick to the air fryer basket, therefore, I do not prepare with any brushing of olive oil. If you do find that your bread sticks, it is a good idea to line it with parchment paper or brush with a little olive oil.
