New Holiday Side Dish?
While I do love the classic green bean casserole, this new savory green bean casserole sure does rank right up there. When the Holiday season rolls around again, I will have to ask the family which recipe they want served. It looks wonderful on the Thanksgiving table along side our other side dishes.
This recipe takes very little prep time and it is wonderful to pop in the oven while you are making the rest of the meal. We enjoyed having this with our mashed potatoes and meatloaf. Those recipes are here too…we just loved the combination.
Good quality cheese
There are so many options for cheese in Wisconsin. We are very lucky to live in a state that has award winning cheese. Creating new recipes with a wide variety of cheese is always fun. I saved some of the Asiago cheese and topped the individual servings with it. Really dressed up the presentation.
Bacon and Green Beans
My son-in-law is in love with any recipe that includes bacon. I had his approval as soon as I added bacon to the casserole. Do you have a bacon lover in your family? The photo above captures a delectable piece of bacon in the front too. enjoy –

How to Make Savory Homemade Green Bean Casserole
It is an easy recipe to prepare with simple fresh ingredients.
- French Cut Green Beans. You can use canned, frozen, or fresh green beans.
- Asiago Cheese. Other flavorful cheeses would work well for this recipe such as parmesan cheese, feta cheese, cheddar cheese or any other cheese you enjoy the taste of.
- Bacon
- Garlic
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Olive oil
- Bread. Any day old bread works well for this recipe. However, if you prefer the taste and texture reminiscent of the classic recipe, you can swap out the bread for crispy fried onions.
In a large bowl combine the green beans, shredded cheese, cut up bacon, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, salt, and pepper. (reserve about 1/4 Cup of the shredded cheese to top servings for presentation). Add to a prepared 9 X 13 baking dish or casserole dish. Bake for 45 minutes in a 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven.
While that is baking, Cut up the 3 bread slices into small cubes. In a medium sized mixing bowl, add the bread cubes. Drizzle olive oil on the bread and stir to coat. After the green bean casserole has baked for 45 minutes, add the cubed bread to the top and bake for 15 more minutes until the bread is crispy and golden brown.
When serving, add an addition of cheese to the top of the servings for a beautiful presentation. You’ll find it’s more of a cheesy green bean casserole.

Make-Ahead Directions
Make this a day ahead. Just combine the green bean mixture and transfer to the baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. When you are ready to bake, take out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before you bake to give the dish a chance to warm to room temperature. It helps make sure things bake evenly in the cooking process.
To Store This Casserole
To store cooked green beans, let them cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. Refrigerate promptly within two hours of cooking to maintain freshness, and label the container with the date for easy tracking. When reheating, opt for methods like the oven or large skillet to restore the toppings crispiness. Enjoy within 3-4 days for the best taste and texture.
