Granny Shawl Crochet Pattern

Inspired by the beloved granny square motif, this shawl showcases the intricate beauty of traditional crochet, transforming it into a chic and wearable accessory. Whether you’re a seasoned crochet aficionado or just starting your crafting journey, this pattern offers a delightful opportunity to explore new stitches.

With the simple stitches, this is a great pattern to work as it is a repeat of row two crochet stitches. I love these kinds of crochet patterns, so I can watch TV with the family and still crochet as I am not too worried about the stitch count either.

The combination of the granny stitch cluster and the variegated thread lightweight yarn create a piece that’s both visually captivating and remarkably easy to make.

What is Thread Yarn?

Thread cake yarn may come in solid colors or ombre yarn. Thread is usually lighter and thinner than yarn, making it the perfect choice for delicate fabrics. This type of yarn is perfect for both crocheting, knitting, and sewing.

Thread yarn is typically made from different fibers, including cotton, polyester, silk, or a blend of these materials. The choice of fiber depends on the desired characteristics of the thread, such as strength, luster, or softness.

Thread yarn comes in a wide range of colors, allowing crafters and seamstresses to match or contrast with the fabric they are working with.

The thickness or weight of the thread can vary as well, and it is usually denoted by a number. A higher number indicates a finer thread, while a lower number represents a thicker thread.

You will find this type yarn in yarn cakes or a hank of yarn

Tread Yarn Cake Scarf Pattern

Yarn Cake

A yarn cake is a specific form of yarn packaging that has gained popularity in recent years. It is a center-pull ball of yarn that is wound in a cylindrical shape, resembling a cake or a small, squat cylinder. However, you can start the yarn from the outside, which is helpful for ombre yarn. As it allows you to start with the color you desire and the gradient yarn cake color changes as you continue to work your way through the skein.

Yarn cakes are shaped like cylinders or flattened spheres. Yarn cakes are often used for commercially produced yarns and are designed to be used directly from the center without needing to be wound into a ball.

They are particularly appreciated for their easy storage and transportation, as the stable shape of the cake prevents the yarn from tangling and becoming messy.

Hank of Yarn

A hank of yarn refers to a specific type of yarn packaging. It is a loose, coiled bundle of yarn that is typically sold in a looped form. Hanks are commonly used for hand-dyed or specialty yarns. Loop Form: A hank is a continuous length of yarn that has been twisted into a large loop, forming a donut shape. The loop keeps the yarn intact and prevents tangling.

Hanks are often preferred for specialty or hand-dyed yarns because the loose structure allows the yarn to retain its natural drape and prevents distortion or flattening of the fibers. They are commonly used by fiber artists, knitters, and crocheters who enjoy the process of winding the yarn before starting their project.

It’s important to note that hanks can be more prone to tangling compared to other forms of yarn packaging, so care must be taken during the winding process to avoid tangles and knots.

How to Wear a Shawl with a Dress

Wearing a shawl with a dress can add a stylish and elegant touch to your outfit while providing warmth or coverage. Here are a few suggestions for different ways to wear a simple shawl with a dress:

Classic Drape: Start by folding the shawl in half diagonally to create a triangle shape. Drape the folded shawl over your shoulders, allowing the two ends to hang down in the front. Adjust the shawl so that it falls evenly on both sides. You can secure it with a shawl pin or brooch for added style and security.

Knotted Shawl: Fold the shawl in half diagonally to create a triangle. Place the shawl around your neck, with the two ends hanging down in the front. Tie the two ends together in a loose knot or a decorative knot, leaving the ends hanging down. This creates a chic and modern look.

Wear as a Wrap

Belted Wrap: Place the shawl over your shoulders with the two ends hanging down in the front. Take a wide belt and wrap it around your waist, covering the shawl ends. This creates a defined waistline and adds structure to your look while keeping the shawl in place.

One-Shoulder Wrap: Fold the shawl diagonally to form a triangle. Drape the shawl over one shoulder, allowing the two ends to hang down in the back. Adjust the shawl to create an asymmetrical look, with one end longer than the other. You can secure it with a shawl pin or simply let it drape naturally.

Shoulder Wrap: Fold the shawl in half diagonally to form a triangle. Hold the folded shawl behind your back, with the two ends in your hands. Bring the shawl around your arms and drape it over your shoulders, crossing the ends in the front. Adjust the drape as desired and secure the ends with a knot or a decorative pin.

Neck Warmer Scarf: If the shawl is made of lightweight thread yarn, it can be wrapped closely around the neck for an elegant scarf accessory.

The way you wear a shawl with a dress is a matter of personal style and preference.

Pattern Notes

When using thread yarn, the result is a lightweight shawl. However, this can be made in different yarn weights from fingering weight yarn to worsted yarn. Note, it will change the size of the shawl and the texture, drape, and feel.

While I used one skein of ombre yarn. It is nice to have just two ends to weave in. However, you can use various yarn colors for a truly unique shawl.

I used a slightly larger hook size from what the package directions recommend. The goal was to have a  light and slightly open crochet stitches for a light and lacy look. You can experiment with different hook sizes to find your favorite. However, remember it will change the size of the crochet project.

The shell stitch border is crocheted after the shawl is complete. Do not cut off the yarn after the last row. You will continue crocheting on the sides.

Turn your work after each row.

The chain 3 at the beginning of each row counts as a double crochet.

You will always start with the CH 3, 2 DC in the same ST and end with 3 DC in the last ST. Until you work the border.

This pattern is written in U.S. Terms.
