Crochet Cotton Candy Fluffy Blanket

I swear the art of crochet has jumped to new soaring heights as there are so many yarn lovers making so many wonderful and beautiful crochet items. It has become the HIP thing to do.

Adding Color Rows to the Cotton Candy Blanket

One of the most popular handmade items I am seeing right now is the coveted super chunky crochet blanket.

Well, this fluffy blanket will not disappoint in the super chunky feel. The yarn is a 5 on the bulky scale. To be honest, I purchased this yarn on a huge sale online at Love Crafts and did not even realize that it was a bulky yarn. let’s look at a closeup of the fluffiness of this yarn.

These blankets are understandably amazing in every way- so warm and cozy, soft and wonderful to snuggle under and really elegant-looking draped over the couch.

It’s all about the Fluff!

To be honest working with a fluffy and bulky yarn with little nubs on it was not on my bucket list. Why? How the heck to you see the stitches! Am I right!?! Well, let me tell you how this is done with ease. This is one of our favorite blankets.

Easy Chunky Crochet Blanket Draped Over a Couch

The trickiest part of this crochet blanket is the first row. After that, it as a breeze.

First Row

When crocheting the first row, I tugged a bit on the beginning chain stitches to see where to insert my crochet hook for the next set of stitches. Make sure that you have good lighting for this first row. Once this row is complete, it is easy to see right where to insert your hook as it is between to double crochet stitches.

The cheerful pastel colors really bright up our home décor. it becomes a great piece for Easter decorating or just anytime you want to bring some sunshine and cheer inside your home

Tips on Working with Fluffy Yarn

The first tip is to feel your way through the yarn. Once you do a few rounds you should be able to get a feel for where your crochet hook need to go to achieve the stitches as you learn the new yarn and hook tension.

Additionally, when first working with this yarn, it might be best to avoid dark colors. They are hard to see the stitches in anyway and the fluffy yarn, makes it even more difficult. Lastly, use a stitch that works with the yarn, not against it.

Pattern Notes

Written in US terms.

Turn at the end of each row.

The chain three at the beginning of each row counts as a double crochet.

Repeat row 2 throughout the pattern.

Basic Crochet Stitches Used

Chain Stitch (CH ST)

Begin the chain stitch by making a slip knot on the crochet hook. Leave about a 5-inch tail on the yarn. This will be weaved in later.

Next snug up the yarn loop that is on the crochet hook; while it should be firm, it should also be loose enough to slide on the hook with ease.

Keeping the loop on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch, wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front. Draw the yarn through the loop. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through both loops that are currently on the hook. (The first chain stitch is complete).

Double Crochet (DC). Yarn over, insert the hook through both loops and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Lastly, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook.

Yarn Color Pattern

This crochet pattern has a repeat of the row color order.

  1. Lemonade
  2. Sprout
  3. Cloud
  4. Cotton Candy

The row pattern for color changing is 6, 3, 2. Therefore, the first 6 rows used Lemonade, the next 3 rows used Sprout, then the next 2 rows used Cloud yarn. Keep working the colors in order. Hopefully, this makes sense. I think that this helped give this blanket a modern look. Reference the color charts at the bottom of this crochet pattern for more detail.

Begin Crochet Pattern

Start with a Slip Knot. Place a slip knot on your crochet hook.

Chain 130

Row 1

In the 4th ST, complete 2 DC. [SK 1, 2 DC in next ST] Repeat across. End with a DC in last ST. Turn

Rows 2 – 94

CH 3, [2 DC between the previous row DCs] Repeat across. End with a DC in last ST. Turn

Finishing

When you have reached the end of the pattern, cut the yarn leaving about a 12-inch yarn tail. Pull the yarn tail through the last stitch.

Use the yarn needle to weave the yarn through the crochet stitches to secure.

Would .love to make one solid color..how many skeins would I need. Pattern doesn’t state how many total are required,

    1. Lemonade 7 skeins – 840 yards, Sprout 4 skeins – 480 yards, Cloud 4 skeins – 480 yards, Candy 4 skeins – 480 yards. If you made this using just one color you would need 19 skeins or 2,280 yards of this yarn. Hope this helps. Enjoy the pattern.

  2. Will the colors ever come back in stock for this blanket? still waiting for Cloud and Cotton Candy to be in stock!! I want to do this blanket for our new grand child coming soon!!

    1. Thanks! After the first row, it is super easy. The first row is just a bit hard to see the stitches, but if you tug a little, you will see them. Enjoy your gorgeous fluffy blanket. vicky
