This is a fun recipe to make with your kids. Butter up their hands and let them press the mixture in the pan. Or pour it out on wax paper and let them have fun making shapes.

If you are looking for a gluten-free sweet snack, this is one to add to the list and make often.

Finding the Perfect Combination for a Ooey Gooey Marshmallow and Cereal Treat

For years, I could not make Rice Krispie Treats. They were dry and hard, real crispy treats! I used to use the stove top method to melt the butter and add it to the melted marshmallows. What I realized years later, is that if you cook the marshmallows too long, it will harden just like sugar does when you make candy.

However, one day, I tried my hand at making this delicious treat in the microwave. It was a game changer!

That was only part of the equation though. When making this recipe, make sure to have a 2:1 ratio of marshmallows to cereal.

This way, no matter what size the cereal box comes in, you always know how much marshmallows to get for the best marshmallow-y gooeyness.

For me making this recipe in the microwave is a shortcut that saves time, but also turns out to be a better cereal bar than the traditional stove top method. And it is a fool-proof method.

The Fruity Pebbles Bars turn out perfect every single time.

How to Make Microwave Fruity Pebbles Treats Recipe

This recipe is super easy if you use the microwave directions. If you prefer, you can use the stove top method, but to be honest, I gave up trying to use that method years ago.

First a Pro Tip. Once the marshmallows are melted, they will stick to everything. Therefore, whatever you use for a pan or spoon, make sure to spray with oil or coat with a light coating of butter.

So, start by preparing your pan.

Then melt the butter.

Next add the marshmallows and stir to coat. Use the microwave to melt the marshmallows. You will know they are ready when they are puffy and doubled in size.

Add the cereal and stir in the melted marshmallow mixture. Pro Tip. If you like little bits of marshmallow in some extra marshmallows. About ½ cup.

Transfer the cereal mixture into an even layer in the prepared pan. Give it a gentle press with a buttered spatula. Let it rest for 1 hour to cool to room temperature.

text ingredients

Instructions

  • Prepare a 9 x 13 pan with spray oil or a light coating of butter on the bottom and sides. Optionally, line with parchment paper sprayed with oil or buttered. This makes it easier to remove from the pan and cut into small squares for serving.
  • In a very large microwave safe bowl. Melt the butter for 40 seconds.
  • Add the mini marshmallows. Stir to coat with the melted butter. Microwave on high heat for 3 minutes. Just until the marshmallows are puffed up.
  • Next, add the cereal and stir with a large sturdy spoon. Pro tip. Spray the spoon first with oil as this will keep the melted marshmallows from sticking.
  • Spoon the cereal mixture into an even layer in the prepared pan.
  • Gently press the cereal mixture into the pan. Pro Tip. Use the back of a spoon sprayed with cooking oil to do this.
  • Let cool for 1 hour at room temperature. Cut into squares or other shapes.

Can I make these with other flavors of cereal?

Yes, any cereal can be made into marshmallow treats! I have used this same recipe for Classic Rice Krispie Treats, Cocoa Pebbles Bites, Fruit Loops Cereal Treats, Lucky Charms for St. Patrick’s Day, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Treats, and Rice Checks Marshmallow Treats.

As long as you use the 2:1 ratio of marshmallows to cereal and cook the marshmallows just long enough to melt. You will end up with a delicious tasting combination.

Perfect for those mornings when you have to eat and run.

How to Store Fruity Pebbles Treats

These are best stored at room temperature. They will last the longest in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag; up to 4 days.

While you can freeze, they are not quite as gooey as when they are room temperature. To freeze, it is best to wrap individual servings in plastic wrap. Then place the cereal bars in a single layer in an airtight container or heavy duty plastic bag. They will keep in the freezer for up to 4 months.

When you are ready to enjoy sweet treats with a fruity twist, just remove the serving from the freezer. Let thaw to room temperature and enjoy your Fruity Pebble Treats.
