Beginner-Friendly Quilting Project
It’s a project that is easy to make, yet it looks like a tapestry that should be hanging on the wall behind your sofa. If you are new to sewing and quilting, this tablecloth sewing project is for you. Even for seasoned quilters, this is a super fun and quick quilting project.
Six large strips of the floral fabric are paired with white sashing strips. It makes for a project that is as easy as it is stunning. I just love how this one turned out.
Using Leftover Fabric
Recently, I made another table runner using this same fabric using the snowball quilt block, and white sashing strips along with three borders in complimentary pastel colors. That free pattern is called Whimsical Springtime Bunnies Table Runner Quilt Pattern.
After this pattern was completed, I still had a 22” X 42” piece of the floral and bunny rabbits leftover. I just loved it so much; I didn’t want it to just end up in my fabric scrap pile waiting for a someday project. Therefore, I decided to cut it into wide strips, add white sashing pieces between the strips, add a backing, and binding. The result is another gorgeous table runner using the same fabric as the last one, yet it has a completely different look.
In fact, the other tablecloth had a light blue with a white polka dot backing. For this one, I chose a white fabric for the backing fabric. This one can be used with the bottom or the top showing.

Spring meadow Beginner Table Runner Notes
Sew fabric with right sides together using ¼-inch seam allowance. Unless otherwise noted.
Pin or clip your pieces together for easy sewing.
The directions for this quilt are for rotary cutting, machine piecing, machine quilting, and machine sewing on the binding.
Trim any overhanging edges as needed throughout project.
If using directional fabric, make sure to layout your table runner before you begin sewing the strips together to make sure that everything is facing the correct way.
Fabric Cutting Instructions
Wildflower Floral Bunny Fabric cut 6, 6 ½” X 22” strips.
White Fabric cut 5, 1 ½” X 22” strips.
Sewing Strips Together
Between each 6 ½” X 22” floral strip sew a white 1 ½” X 22” strip with right sides together using ¼” seam allowance. Press seams open or to one side.
Quilting the Layers Together
Prepare your backing and batting by cutting them to 24 X 44 inches. Working on a flat surface, lay your backing fabric face down with the batting on top, then the quilt top face up on top of the batting. Smooth out any wrinkles. Using safety pins, pin the layers together every 5 or 6 inches or so to hold the layers in place. Alternatively, you can use basting glue spray to baste the layers together. Tip. The backing fabric and batting should be larger than the top of the table runner; about two inches on all sides.
Sew the Layers Together
Mark the sewing lines using a long ruler and a fabric marking pen that disappears with heat or a water soluble one. Mark a sewing line on each 6 inch panel 2 inches apart running the width of the table runner. There will be 2 sewing lines on each 6 inch strip. Then sew on the edges of both sides of the white sashing strips.
Tip. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine to sew through all three layers on the marked lines.
The next step is trimming away the excess backing and batting.
To trim the backing and batting, use a large cutting mat, a longer ruler, and a rotary cutter. Lay the table runner quilt flat. Place the ruler along the edge of the quilt and use it as a guide to run your rotary cutter against it to trim the batting and backing fabric to the size of the top fabric. Do this on all four sides.
Binding the table runner
You will need a binding strip 2 ½ X 143 inches.
You can make your own binding strip by joining 5 white jelly roll strips. Fold in half with the wrong sides together lengthwise and press with the iron. Set this aside.
How to Make Your Own Quilt Binding Tutorial
Sewing on the Binding
Pin the raw edge of the binding onto raw edge of the quilt back. Start in the middle of a side leaving approximately a 3” tail hanging. Note: This hanging part will be used to sew to the other end of the binding strip when you have finished sewing all four sides of the binding onto the quilt.
Sew the binding onto all four sides of the quilt making sure to miter the corners and join the binding.
Joining the Binding
When you come near the beginning tail of the binding, stop, and cut the binding so that they overlap about 3 inches. With the beginning end opened and flat fold the end over about an inch. Then refold in half. Next, tuck the ending tail into the beginning tail. Make sure it lies straight and flat. Pin in place.
Continue stitching until you reach the beginning stitches.
Sew the binding strip onto the front of the quilt. Fold the binding over the edge to the front using clips or pins to hold in place. Sew along the edge to secure the binding on the quilt top making sure to miter the corners.
Once all the sides and corners are stitched, you are done with your Spring meadow Beginner Table Runner Pattern.
